Arroyo Hits Olympic Standard to Highlight Wildly Successful Day Two of Pepsi Florida Relays
Friday, April 1, 2016 | Track and Field
Florida totaled 10 top-10 NCAA Division I times on Friday (April 1)
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – The University of Florida track and field program's wildly successful Friday (April 1) at the Pepsi Florida Relays made Thursday's (March 31) outstanding opening act look like a preliminary round, as the Gators posted two NCAA-leading times, an additional eight times and marks that rank in the top five among Division I athletes, and three UF all-time top 10 times and marks.
Junior Andres Arroyo had the day's top performance, finishing the 800 meters in an NCAA-leading time of 1:45.78, also breaking the Olympic standard. The time ranks third on UF's all-time outdoor top 10.
Freshman sprinter Kunle Fasasi had the day two's other NCAA-leading time. The Nigerian covered 400 meters in 45.43 seconds to win the event.
For the women, sprinters Robin Reynolds and Kyra Jefferson posted a 1-2 finish in the 400 meters, recording the No. 2- and No. 3-ranked times in Division I. Reynolds' time of 52.09 is also the fastest by an East Region runner this year.
In the field, Marija Vucenovic had a top mark of 55.79 meters in the javelin throw, moving her up to the No. 3 spot on the Division I outdoor descending order list. Fellow thrower Lloydricia Cameron came through with a massive personal record in the discus, notching the No. 6-ranked throw in program history (54.41 meters).
Other top-10 Division I times came from freshman Ryan Clark (100, 200 meters), junior TJ Holmes (400-meter hurdles), Skylar Ross-Ransom (100-meter hurdles), and Taylor Tubbs (1,500 meters). Devin McDermott was the third Gator to record a UF all-time top 10 time, ascending to seventh in the women's 3,000-meter steeplechase (10:44.40).

HEARING OUT (COACH) HOLLOWAY
On his overall thoughts of Friday's competition…
"I thought everybody did a wonderful job. From the first event this morning with Skylar Ross-Ransom and Ryann McEnany, all the way to the end (of the afternoon) with the 4x400s. I thought Marija (Vucenovic) tonight with the javelin was wonderful. It was a wonderful job by everybody tonight."
On taking the chance to showcase the javelin with a night start…
"It's cool because there's not much else going on, so they get the spotlight and everybody can see what's going on. Coach (Steve) Lemke being a former javelin thrower, it's nice to get them in the spotlight a little bit."
On what he's seen out of the sprinters the first two days…
"We've really been challenging everybody to be a lot more focused and driven. And I saw that today. I just challenged them to come out here and perform like the team that we know we are. They did that. I thought Ryan Clark had a phenomenal day. Kunle Fasasi was amazing. The home-stretch battle between Robin (Reynolds) and Kyra (Jefferson) was nice. Watching Andres Arroyo go 1:45 was amazing. And probably one of the most exciting moments of the day for me was watching TJ Holmes run 50.5 in the 400 hurdles. Just a great day overall."
On Andres Arroyo hitting the Olympic standard…
"More than anything else, Andres has been working very hard. He's a patient guy, I'm a patient guy. We knew it was coming. It was just a matter of time."
On the men's 1,500 meters performance…
"I was extremely proud of the 1,500 group tonight with Jack Guyton, Jack Beitter, and Jimmy Clark coming back from the big 10,000 meters last week. Magnus Pettersen also with a PR. That's a group we know is going to be important to us, and I'm very proud of the work Coach (Paul) Spangler and that group are putting in right now."
