Thursday, April 14, 2016 | Women's Tennis
GAINESVILLE, Fla. - The No. 4 University of Florida women's tennis team looks to clinch the program's 29th SEC Regular Season Championship on Friday night against the No. 3 Georgia Bulldogs. The match up will take place at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex with first serve coming at 5 p.m. ET.
The Gators are undefeated in SEC play this season with a perfect 11-0 record. UF has built an 11 match winning streak behind solid doubles play, where all four pairings are rankings in the Top 65 and singles play where the bottom half of the lineup is a combined 27-1. The task is tall in Athens with Georgia boasting four ranked singles players and two ranked doubles pairs.
Florida will conclude the regular season in Knoxville, Tenn. on Sunday afternoon as they take on the Tennessee Volunteers at 1 p.m. ET.
Last Serve with the Bulldogs
The Gators defeated the Bulldogs, 4-3 in Gainesville on April 11, 2015. After Peggy Porter and Spencer Liang clinched the doubles point via a tiebreaker on court three, UF would jump to a 3-0 lead behind two singles wins on courts one and two. The Bulldogs came storming with three wins of their own, but cool and calm Brianna Morgan gave the Gators a match-clinching three set win on court three.
Series History against Georgia
Florida leads the all-time series over Georgia, 46-15. Worth noting is that Florida has an astonishing 385-20 all-time record against SEC opponents, with 15 of those losses coming at the hands of the Bulldogs.
Chasing Number 29
With a win over the Bulldogs on Friday night, the Gators would clinch the program's 29th regular season SEC Championship and 11th for head coach Roland Thornqvist. Florida won the title last season with a 12-1 conference record.
Four, Five and Six: 27-1
The bottom half of the Florida lineup has been stellar in SEC singles play with a combined record of 27-1. The only other team close to that record in the SEC is the Georgia Bulldogs who sit at a combined 34-5 at those positions. Florida has played five different players on those three courts.
Florida vs. Top-5 Opponents
Since the beginning of the collegiate tennis team rankings in 1987, the Orange and Blue have an all-time record of 116-52, when competing against Top-5 opponents. UF is 2-1 against Top-5 competitors this season with wins over No. 4 USC and No. 5 Vanderbilt.
