Florida, Stanford Set for Another Battle in the NCAA Tournament
Wednesday, May 18, 2016 | Women's Tennis
TULSA, Okla. – The No. 1-ranked University of Florida women's tennis team is set for another epic NCAA match with the Stanford Cardinal in the NCAA Round of 16 on Thursday afternoon in Tulsa, Okla. First serve is set for 1 p.m. ET at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center.
80 days and 18 matches have passed since an opponent has defeated the No. 2 seed Florida Gators. That opponent: the Stanford Cardinal. Since the Gators were on the losing side of a 4-3 decision back on Feb. 28, the team has won 18 straight dual matches, including sweeping SEC regular season and tournament play, defeating 12 Top-25 ITA ranked opponents and 10 wins by a 4-0 decision.
Now, the season is on the line for two teams who have met 13 times in the NCAA Tournament, with 10 of those victories going to Stanford. The three wins for Florida, 2011, 2003 and 1996, which account for three of the Florida tennis program's six NCAA titles. The two programs have a combined 23 NCAA Titles between the two, where 10 of those 23 titles have been decided in a Florida-Stanford NCAA Final. Yet, the perennial powerhouses have never met before the NCAA Semifinals.
With each program traveling over 1,000 miles to meet in the middle of the country, there is no doubt this match will be on the level of an NCAA Championship final. First serve is slated for 1 p.m. ET from the Michael D. Case Tennis Center.
Last Serve with the Cardinal
The Gators dropped a heartbreaker in February as the Cardinal dealt Florida its second loss of the 2016 season at the Taube Family Tennis Center. After claiming the doubles point on courts two and three, Morgan and Danilina clinched singles victories at five and six for the Orange and Blue. But Stanford would win four singles matches on the top four courts with the deciding match coming down to Kuhlman on four, where she fell to Hardebeck in three sets.
Series History against Stanford
Stanford leads the all-time series, 20-14.
