EUGENE, Ore. – The University of Florida men's golf team seeks its fifth national championship title in program history when it tees off the NCAA Championship at the Eugene Country Club in Eugene, Ore., on Friday. The 2016 tournament marks Florida's 52nd appearance at the NCAA Championship.
The Orange and Blue has brought the national championship trophy home four times, winning in 1968, 1973, 1993 and 2001. Two Gators have been crowned the individual national champion: Bob Murphy (1966) and Nick Gilliam (2001).
With two team titles and four individual wins under its belt this year, Florida enters the season finale fresh off of a tie for runner-up honors at the NCAA Kohler Regional Championship. Individually, freshmen Sam Horsfield and Gordon Neale will lead the Gator lineup, followed by sophomore Alejandro Tosti, who finished as the runner-up in the NCAA Regional contest. Freshman Jorge Garcia will compete in the No. 4 spot, while junior Ryan Orr will play in the No. 5 position.
Head Coach JC Deacon
On his thoughts entering the NCAA Championship:
"As a group, I think we're playing the best we've played all year. Sam and Ale are obviously at the top of their game. Gordon and Jorge and Ryan Orr are looking the best that they have, too. I'm cautiously optimistic. We have to play really strong mentally. We have to play really patient. We have to be really smart. If we do that, I think we have the talent and ability to play well out here."
On the Eugene Country Club course:
"You have to drive it really well. I think that's one huge thing. It's a pretty narrow golf course, and we have traditionally been a very good driving team. I like how that sets up for us. The greens are going to be extremely fast, and some of our guys have a fantastic touch, so it's a good course. I think the guys are really comfortable with the weather and really enjoying the scenery, and it's been a fun trip already. We're all excited to get going, that's for sure."
Course Information: Eugene Country Club is a par-70, 7,014-yard course.
