Gators Cap NCAA East Preliminary with Nine More Eugene Qualifiers
Saturday, May 28, 2016 | Track and Field
UF will send 25 entries to the NCAA Outdoor Championships in Eugene
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The University of Florida track and field program earned another nine NCAA Outdoor Championships berths on Saturday's (May 28) closing night of competition at the East Preliminary, bringing their three-day total to 25.
Sophomore shot put thrower Lloydricia Cameron started the day for the Gators with a fourth-place finish, becoming the first Gator since Keely Medeiros (2011) to qualify for the NCAA Outdoor Championships in the event. Cameron is also the first UF underclassman to qualify since Medeiros' sophomore campaign (2010).
The men's and women's triple jump each produced a national qualifier for the Gators.
With his fifth-place finish on the men's side, KeAndre Bates became just the sixth underclassman since 2010 to advance to the NCAA Outdoor Championships in both horizontal jumps. Bates also joined Marquis Dendy (2012) and Christian Taylor (2010) as the only UF underclassmen since 2002 to accomplish that feat.
For the women, Yanis David posted the No. 4-ranked mark on the program's all-time outdoor top 10 (13.33 meters) to take ninth place and secure her place in Eugene. Moreover, David joined Ciarra Brewer (2012) as the only other Gator freshman to qualify for NCAA Outdoor Championships triple jump since 2002.
Yanick Hart climbed UF's all-time outdoor top 10 as well. The Jamaican finished the 110-meter hurdles in 13.58 seconds, the No. 5-ranked time in program history, and took fourth place to book his second consecutive trip to Eugene.
Taylor Tubbs capped the individual events with a fourth-place finish in the 5,000 meters to become the first Gator since Genevieve LaCaze (2009) qualify for the NCAA Outdoor Championships in the event.
Both the men's and women's 4x100 and 4x400 relay teams punched their tickets to the Beaver State. This marks the third consecutive year all four of UF's relay teams advanced to the national meet.
All of this week's qualifiers will compete at the NCAA Championships at Historic Hayward Field on June 8-11.

HEARING OUT (COACH) HOLLOWAY
Head Coach Mike Holloway on UF's 25 entries for the NCAA Championships…
"I think we're in a good spot. We got just about everything we wanted to get done this weekend. Overall, I thought we had a great weekend. A much better representation of who we are and how we do things. Just very proud of the group as a whole for coming out here, staying focused, and committing to what we do."
On Kyra Jefferson not advancing in the 200 meters and her availability going forward…
"I feel really bad for Kyra, who's had some nagging injuries all year long. Unfortunately, she couldn't push through them this weekend. She was a trooper; she went out there and tried to do it. She said she wanted to try and compete for her teammates. It just didn't work out for her.
"(Her availability) is something we will have to address later on. I have the ultimate trust in our doctors and trainers. At the end of the day, this is about Kyra's future. If she's not completely healthy at the NCAA meet, she's got some things this summer that are important to her, important to her family. Right now I just want to get her healthy, and we will go from there. Not even thinking about whether or not she's going to run in a week and a half right now."
On Taylor Tubbs' fourth-place finish in the 5,000 meters and her development over the last two years…
"Coach (Paul) Spangler has done a wonderful job with her, bringing her along slowly. His biggest challenge with her was convincing her she was a 5k girl and not a 1,500-meter runner. She's run 16:07 this year and won the Penn Relays, and coming back and backing it up here with a 16:10 and making her first national meet as an individual is a special thing for Taylor.
"But I think that's representative of what we do here. I've been saying this the last couple of meets: the people who trust, run well. She trusts her coach. She trusts what they do. That's why she's going to the national meet."
On Lloydricia Cameron bouncing back to qualify in the shot put, the triple jump qualifiers, and short hurdlers…
"Yesterday, I don't think (Lloydricia) trusted. She thought too much. Today, she apologized to Coach (Steve) Lemke for yesterday, promised him she'd do better, and she was better today. The triple jump was good. Really proud of KeAndre (Bates)—new personal best for him. And that's close to Yanis (David's) personal best. Also extremely proud of Yanick Hart today with a new personal best. Even though she didn't quite make it, Skylar Ross-Ransom had a big PR today, too.
"So even the people who didn't make it to the national meet came out and competed with a lot of heart, a lot of pride, and a lot of passion. That was really great."
