Gators Primed For NCAA Outdoor Championships
Tuesday, June 7, 2016 | Track and Field
UF's men enter the national competition ranked No. 2, while the women check in at No. 9
EUGENE, Ore. – The University of Florida track and field program's combined 25 entries, tied for the fourth-highest total in the country, will vie for individual and team titles at the NCAA Outdoor Championships, which are set to take place at Historic Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore. this week (June 8-11).
Florida's men, ranked No. 2 in the latest USTFCCCA National Team Rankings, boast 12 entries, the fourth-most of any club. On the women's side, the ninth-ranked Gators have 13 entries, a figure that checks in at seventh nationally.
The bulk of the men's entries come in the sprints, hurdles, and relays. UF boasts nine entries across those categories, the third-highest total by any team this year. Eric Futch and TJ Holmes lead the bunch, as the two enter the meet seeded No. 1 and No. 3, respectively, in the 400-meter hurdles. Futch and Holmes are the first UF tandem since 2004 and fifth since 1998 to qualify for the NCAA Outdoor Championships.
Seven of the women's entries come from field events, including one in each of the four throws. Florida's women are just the eighth team since 2002 to have at least one NCAA Outdoors qualifier in all four throws, with Oregon (2014) being the only other group since 2007 to accomplish the feat. Javelin thrower Marija Vucenovic headlines the contingent, as she enters the meet seeded fourth.
Men's events will be held on Wednesday (June 8) and Friday (June 10), while women's events will take place on Thursday (June 9) and Saturday (June 11).
Live television coverage will be provided by ESPN, ESPN2, and ESPNU, in addition to online streaming available via Watch ESPN. Broadcast times and information can be found below.
