Clement Captures Olympic Gold, Zunic Becomes First Croatian Finalist in History
Thursday, August 18, 2016 | Track and Field
Kerron Clement now boasts three career Olympic medals and four outdoor world titles
RIO DE JANEIRO – Gator Great Kerron Clement (United States) captured the one thing his impressive resume was missing: an individual Olympic gold medal.
Clement, a two-time 400 hurdles world champion and 2008 Olympic gold medalist with Team USA's 4x400 relay, posted a world-best 400 hurdles time of 47.73 seconds, topping a field that logged four national records and saw four men break 48 seconds for the first time in 15 years.
Clement, who previously won a silver medal at the 2008 Summer Games, is one of seven Americans in Olympic history to collect multiple medals in the 400 hurdles.
His gold medal is the sixth in Florida track and field history. It is also the 20th overall medal in program history.
Fellow Gator Greats Stipe Zunic (Croatia) and Kemal Mesic (Bosnia) both competed in the shot put, with Zunic moving on to the final.
Although Zunic finished 11th in the final, he was the first Croatian shot put finalist in Olympic history.
Gator Greats Arman Hall (United States) and Tony McQuay (United States) are expected to run Friday (Aug. 19) night's preliminary men's 4x400 relay race, while Novlene Williams-Mills (Jamaica) is expected to do the same on the women's side. Genevieve LaCaze (Australia) will run the 5,000 meters final, her second final of these Olympics.
