Gators Announce 2016-17 Schedule
Friday, August 19, 2016 | Men's Tennis
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – The Gator men's tennis team will face some of their toughest opponents to date in the 2016-17 season, with a challenging lineup of SEC teams coming to Gainesville.
The team has a competitive home schedule this year, as they see out-of-conference opponents Georgia Southern (Jan. 21), USC (Feb. 4), and UCLA (Feb. 5) again at home, as well as some new opponents, like Kennesaw State (Jan. 21).
This season's home schedule welcomes SEC opponents Texas A&M (Mar. 3), LSU (Mar. 5), South Carolina (Mar. 12), Vanderbilt (Mar. 26), Mississippi State (Apr. 14) and Auburn (Apr. 16).
The Gators are coming off a 21-7 season, one of their best since 2010, when the team went 21-5. The 2015-16 season earned them a 1st place trophy in the SEC Tournament, and a 2nd place finish in the Southeastern Conference with a conference record of 10-2.
The team tallied an impressive 12-1 record at home, losing only to the University of Virginia, who they will play again this season in Charlottesville. Virginia took the NCAA title for the second year in a row in 2016, and is just one of the two Top Five schools the Gators will face this year, as they'll also be welcoming Ohio State to Gainesville in the spring.
Alongside a competitive team schedule, individual Gators will see tough competition in fall tournaments. Four players will go to the Duke Invitational in September, and a number of strong players will play the Future tournament in January.

Head Coach Bryan Shelton on this upcoming season:
"I'm really excited about this season, we're certainly going to challenge ourselves throughout the fall with some great, great events… Throughout the fall each of our guys will have at least four opportunities to play high-level tennis and we'll really find out where we're at throughout the fall."
"In the spring, we feel like we always have one of the toughest schedules in the nation, and our schedule this year with USC and UCLA coming here to play us is great, both of those programs have been at the top of college tennis for a long time."
"All in all I think we've got a great schedule, we've got a very deep team again this year, so those guys are going to get valuable experience throughout the fall. Our four new guys coming on to this program are really going to get an idea of what college tennis is all about."
