GAINESVILLE, Florida – A 10-save weekend gives University of Florida sophomore goalkeeper Kaylan Marckese the Southeastern Conference Defensive Player of the Week award, the league office released this afternoon. This is the first such honor of Marckese's career.
A Gator has been honored in each of the two player of the week announcements this season, as senior Savannah Jordan was recipient of week one's SEC Offensive Player of the Week honor.
The other players picking up weekly honors are Arkansas' Stefani Doyle (Offensive) and Missouri's Sarah Luebbert (Freshman).
Marckese's Performance Last Week:
Florida traveled to California for a pair of matches versus top-15 opponents and the Gators split in overtime. In the weekend's opener at No. 3 Stanford, Marckese equaled her collegiate high with six saves in the 1-0 OT loss versus the Cardinal. On Sunday in the 4-3 OT win at No. 15 UCLA, Marckese registered four saves. Included among those saves was a stop on the Bruins' first penalty kick of the match.
Marckese has played every minute in goal for Florida this season. She has registered 13 saves through Florida's four 2016 matches.
Next up for the Gators:
Play against top-15 competition continues as Florida faces No. 1 Florida State in Tallahassee on Friday, Sept. 2. The match streams on ESPN3 beginning at 7 p.m. ET.
The series between these two teams has gone back and forth in recent years. After three consecutive Seminole wins in 2011, 2012 and 2013, the Gators have taken the last two meetings. The Gators own a 13-10 advantage in the all-time series.
Listen to Adam Schick and Matthew Stubbington's call of the match on ESPN Gainesville 850AM/95.3FM or via the FloridaGators.com stream.
