No. 7 Gators Open Spartan Invitational with Sweep of CMU

Florida will play its second match of the day at 4:30 p.m. vs. Morgan State.

EAST LANSING, Mich. -- An early morning match didn't faze the No. 7 Gators, who cruised past Central Michigan in a 3-0 sweep (25-10, 25-17, 25-10) to open play at the Spartan Invitational Saturday in East Lansing.

In the first meeting between the Gators and Chippewas (1-3) at Michigan State's Jenison Field House, Florida capitalized on its depth to improve to 2-1 on the season, while getting both its veterans and youth significant playing time. The Orange and Blue posted their best hitting efficiency of the season so far (.389) and had a season-best nine service aces, three from freshman Chanelle Hargreaves and two from redshirt sophomore Lindsey Rogers. Both Hargreaves and Rogers dropped back-to-back aces in the first and third sets, respectively.

Florida cruised in the first frame, highlighted by six of Carli Snyder's team-high 14 kills, a 1.000 Rhamat Alhassan hitting percentage, stellar serving from Allie Gregory and Rogers – including three aces from the duo in the opening set. After a 3-3 tie, the Gators used a 12-4 run to take control, eventually taking it 25-10 with a sparkling .571 efficiency.

CMU challenged in the second by taking an early 6-5 lead, then narrowing UF's lead to two at 17-15, but the Orange and Blue closed on an 8-2 run for the 25-17 set victory. Freshman setter Cheyenne Huskey entered late in the set and made an impact at the net with her first career block before setting the third, dishing her first two Gator assists and dumping over a kill.

Hargreaves hot serving hand in the third – a six-point run including three service aces – helped Florida out to an 11-1 lead it wouldn't relinquish. The Gators held the Chippewas to an -.130 in the set. Redshirt sophomore Ann-Lorrayne Bzoch saw her first action at Florida in the back row and junior libero Caroline Knop scooped up a team best 14 digs to aid in back-row play and serve-receive stability.

The Gators return to Jenison Field House at 4:30 p.m. for their second match of the day against Morgan State. All matches this weekend will have live streaming, with Sunday's Gators-Spartans showdown scheduled to stream on BTN+ or via the BTN2Go app.
