Last Two Standing: Ingildsen, Perez Represent UF in Pro Tournament
Monday, January 9, 2017 | Men's Tennis
PLANTATION, Fla. – Sophomore Alfredo Perez and Freshman Johannes Ingildsen will represent the Gators in the Main Draw of the USA F3 Futures, a division of the ITF Pro Circuit. The two will face some of the highest-rated pro competition in the world in one of the most trying tournaments they will see in their collegiate careers.
This tournament has proven to be some of the hardest competition the team has seen recently, as seven Gators have already been eliminated. Despite the challenges, including some less-than-ideal weather, Alfredo Perez and Johannes Ingildsen have fought through four qualifying rounds to advance to the Main Draw, which begins Tuesday morning.
As a newcomer to the team, Ingildsen has done nothing less than impress from his first day as a Gator. The freshman boasts a 12-4 singles record from this fall semester, while he and counterpart Perez racked up an 8-1 doubles record in the fall. While the pair was not ranked in the preseason, the team jumped to hold the No. 3 spot nationally.
Perez also holds an impressive record as a sophomore, tallying a 43-13 singles record and a 27-7 doubles record. He is currently the highest-ranked member of the team, holding the No. 13 spot in the Oracle/ITA National Singles Rankings.
Perez will face Maciej Rajski (POL), who held the third seed in the qualifying competition, while Ingildsen will square off against Ilya Vasilyev (RUS) Tuesday morning in the first round of the Main Draw.
The Gators are using this tournament to kick-start their 2017 Spring season, which commences Saturday, January 21st with a double-header on the Gators' home court.
Quoting Head Coach Bryan Shelton
"All three guys competed hard today. I am sure that playing these matches in high winds has really sharpened our guys up. Chase lost today to a player from Argentina who was a mirror image of himself. It was a great match and Chase learned a lot from the loss. Alfredo wasn't pleased with his play today, but glad he found a way to win. Johannes played his best match of the year today. Overall I was pleased with our competitive spirit and glad two of our guys will be in the main draw tomorrow."
