ATLANTA – The Gators men's tennis team concluded the 2017 Intercollegiate Tennis Association Regional Championship presented by Oracle on Tuesday. Florida entered the final day with a doubles team and a singles competitor in the finals of their respective events.
The Gators two year streak of doubles titles at the ITA Regional Championship came to an end on Tuesday after the duo of Oliver Crawford and Chase Perez-Blanco fell to No. 1 Robert Loeb and Jan Zielinski of the University of Georgia 6-4, 6-2.
What did continue for the Gators on Tuesday was their streak of teams in a doubles finals. For the third straight tournament of the season, the Gators had a representative in the finals of a doubles main draw. What is more impressive, is the pair of Crawford and Perez-Blanco became the third different duo to reach the finals, showing the depth and talent of this squad.
Andy Andrade and McClain Kessler had a chance to join Crawford and Perez-Blanco in the finals but had their tournament come to an end at the hands of Loeb and Zielinski, 6-3, 7-6(5).
Andrade had a great tournament in both singles and doubles, and capped off his stellar regional tournament with a win in the consolation singles final. Andrade took on Jose Garcia of Florida State and after dropping the first set 2-6, rallied to win the next two by scores of 6-3, 6-3.
Coach Shelton on the ITA Regional Championship
"Andy really improved throughout this tournament and once he fully believes in himself, watch out. In doubles we ran into a very good pair today that got better all day. We are doing a lot of things right with our doubles but there are some things we can do better. We will get home and hit the practice courts and put to work the things we learned."
