Dillon Earns Spot On SEC All-Freshman Team

Redshirt freshman Marshall Dillon (25:03.90) raced his way to a 38th-place finish and a spot on the SEC All-Freshman Team.

ATHENS, Ga. – The University of Florida cross country teams took to the UGA Golf Course to compete in the 2017 SEC Cross Country Championships Friday (Oct. 27) morning.

The Gators placed 10th overall (2:05:42.70) on the men's side and 13th (1:55:20.70) on the women's.

The Florida men ran the first race of the day to start the championships and clocked in with an average team time of 25:29.90 to place 10th overall. Redshirt freshman Marshall Dillon (25:03.90) raced his way to a 38th-place finish and a spot on the SEC All-Freshman Team.

Dillon dropped his personal record time by forty seconds to edge out Missouri's Austin Hindman for the final spot. His appearance marks the eighth consecutive season that the Gators have had a student-athlete make SEC All-Freshman Team.

Following Dillon, Jack Rogers (25:08.80) nearly equaled his personal record time and placed 41st while Blake Lowery (25:41.70) dropped his personal record time to cross 69th. Jonathan Hulzebos (72nd - 25:46.30) and Jack Beitter (77th - 25:48.80) closed out the five scoring times for UF.

On the women's side, redshirt junior Morgan Hull (22:09.70) led the group with a 58th-place finish. This morning's 6k event was the first time that the women had raced competitively at that distance this season.

Junior Caitlin McQuilkin-Bell (22:15.80) tallied a 63rd-place finish, while Jessica Pascoe (74th- 22:25.60), Emily Chapman (104th- 23:19.40) and Madison Morse (129th -25:10.20) rounded out the scoring for the Gators.

Next up for the Gators is the NCAA South Regionals Friday, Nov. 10, in Tuscaloosa, Ala.

Quotes

Assistant Coach Chris Solinsky
Overall thoughts on the teams performances…
"I'm pleased with the efforts that we had today. We had some people show really good improvements and more gritty performances. This team is filled with tough kids with incredible character and I'm proud of the way the showed up.

Our team places were not what we were hoping for, but I know we will be stronger going forward when we plug in some key members down the road."

About the men's team…
"The men did a great job of putting themselves in the heat of a deep field and battling. That resulted in many of them running at or below their personal bests on a difficult course. Our top five ran with heart and did a great job of picking off people in the last thousand meters."

About the women's team…
"The women have been snake bit this year with really random issues popping up and then still ran tough today. Morgan (Hull) and Caitlin (McQuilkin-Bell) made some pretty good breakthroughs and I'm excited for them to continue to surprise themselves with what they can accomplish. The future is bright."

On Marshall Dillon's race performance…
"Marshall competed like a veteran. He ran a patient, tough race that resulted in a forty-second personal best on a tough course and a spot on the SEC All-Freshman Team. He has big goals and is well on his way to achieve those if he keeps this up."
