GAINESVILLE, Fla. – The Intercollegiate Tennis Association and Oracle released their end of fall rankings on Wednesday, and six different Gators earned a spot in the national rankings.
Alfredo Perez and Johannes Ingildsen highlight the national rankings for the Gators after earning the top spot following a successful fall season in doubles. The 2016 All-Americans ended last season ranked sixth, but after winning a National Championship at the ITA All-American Tournament back in October, the duo solidified themselves as one of the best pairs once again.
In total the University of Florida had five doubles teams ranked. Joining Perez and Ingildsen are Duarte Vale and McClain Kessler (No. 10), Chase Perez-Blanco and Oliver Crawford (No. 11), Andy Andrade and Perez-Blanco (No. 12) and Andrade and Kessler (No. 35). The five Gator pairs represented in the rankings are the most by any school, with the next closest only having three doubles teams ranked.
Just like in doubles, the Gators are well represented in singles with three student-athletes earning a ranking at the conclusion of the fall season.
Ingildsen is the highest ranked Gator after being ranked No. 7 in the latest rankings. Ingildsen's strong play in the fall helped propel him from a preseason ranking of 59, all the way up to the top 10, and the highest ranking of his young career. Perez dropped one spot to No. 8 after the fall season but has been ranked inside the top 10 in six straight rankings.
Entering the singles rankings for the first time of his career is Duarte Vale. After a fall that saw him go 8-2 in singles he earned a ranking of No. 39. Vale had a great fall in both singles and doubles with a 9-1 record in doubles. He won both the singles and doubles titles at the Gator Ranked +1 tournament while also upsetting the No. 1 seed at the ITA All-American Championship in doubles on his way to the semifinals with Kessler.
The first team rankings will be released on Jan. 3 in preparation for the spring season, with the first singles and doubles rankings coming out on Feb. 7. The team rankings will be released weekly whereas the singles and doubles rankings will be released every other week.
The Gators will be back on the court to open the spring season on Jan. 22 when the Gators welcome the University of Central Florida to the Alfred A. Ring Tennis Complex in the team's first dual of the season. The first serve is scheduled for 5 p.m.
