KeAndre Bates' regional honor is the seventh in the last nine seasons for Gators field athletes
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Florida track and field student-athletes earned three of the Southeastern Conference Indoor Men's Track and Field Awards, and junior jumper KeAndre Bates was named United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association South Region Indoor Field Athlete of the Year, the SEC office and USTFCCCA announced in releases Monday (March 6) afternoon.
Bates earned both the SEC and USTFCCCA South Region Indoor Field Athlete of the Year honors.
The El Paso, Texas native's regional award is the seventh in the last nine seasons for the Gators. Christian Taylor (2009-11), Gray Horn (2012), and Marquis Dendy (2013, 2015) are the other Gators to collect the honor during that span.
Bates, this year's SEC long jump and triple jump champion, joins jumper Mike Morrison (2006), Taylor (2009, 2011), and Dendy (2013, 2015) as the only other Gators in history to earn the conference's top field athlete honor since its inception in 2004. He is also the only man in the nation ranked in the top 10 in both the triple jump (No. 2 – 16.81 meters / 55 feet, 2 inches) and long jump (No. 3 – 8.04 meters / 26 feet, 4.5 inches).
Grant Holloway and Clayton Brown were named SEC Indoor Freshman Runner of the Year and Freshman Field Athlete of the Year, respectively.
Holloway, who won the 60 hurdles title and finished fifth in the long jump sat SEC Indoors, is the fourth Gator to earn the award, joining Kerron Clement (2004), Willie Perry (2006), and Eddie Lovett (2011). The Chesapeake, Va. native became the first man since at least 2001 to score in both the long jump and 60 hurdles at SEC Indoors, and he joined Lovett as the only other freshman since 2000 to win the SEC 60 hurdles title.
Holloway also holds the fastest 60 hurdles time in the nation (7.58) and is ranked second nationally in the long jump (8.05 meters / 26 feet, 5 inches).
Brown, the third-place finisher in the triple jump at SEC Indoors and top-ranked SEC high jumper this season, joins Morrison (2004), combined events athlete Mike Morrison (2007), Taylor (2009), and Bates (2015) as the only Freshman Field Athlete of the Year honorees in school history.
The St. Andrew, Jamaica native ranks tied for second nationally in the high jump (2.25 meters / 7 feet, 4.5 inches) and third nationally in the triple jump (16.58 meters / 54 feet, 4.75 inches).
