Kelly Murphy started every match for the Americans in their bronze medal run at the 2016 Olympics
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Gator Great and 2016 Olympic bronze medalist Kelly Murphy was named to Team USA's roster for the opening weekend of the FIVB World Grand Prix, USA Volleyball announced Wednesday (June 5) night.
Murphy, a four-time American Volleyball Coaches Association All-American for the Gators from 2008-11, last competed for the U.S. women's national team at the 2016 Rio Olympics, starting all eight matches for the Americans during their run to a bronze medal.
Murphy and Team USA will face China, Italy, and Russia—all top-10 teams in the world rankings—from July 7-9 in Kunshan, China.
The FIVB World Grand Prix Preliminary Round continues in Macau, China (July 14-16), and concludes in Cuiaba, Brazil (July 21-23). Championship play will be in Nanjing, China from Aug. 2-6. China and the top five finishers from the preliminary round qualify for the championship.
The United States, with the help of rising senior Rhamat Alhassan, went 7-0 en route to winning the Pan American Cup two weeks ago.
King Helps CNT Red to Runner-Up Finish at Collegiate National Team Program Tournament
Last week (June 27-30), rising sophomore Darrielle King helped the Red Team to a runner-up finish in the USA Volleyball Collegiate National Team Program Tournament.
King and CNT Red swept their preliminary matches against CNT Blue and CNT White, automatically advancing to the title match.
King started five of the six sets in those preliminary matches, totaling 11 points on seven kills and four blocks.
In the final match, CNT Red dropped a five-set decision. King started all five sets, notching three blocks and 10 kills on a .450 hitting percentage.
King was one of 36 individuals selected for the program, which devolved into three 12-member teams. According to May's official announcement, the CNT-Minneapolis squad is part of USA Volleyball's High Performance pipeline, and considered a second tryout for the U.S. Women's National Team.
