Victoria Emma advanced to the quarterfinals

LAS VEGAS – Four Gators were in action on Friday at the 16th annual Freeman Memorial Women's Tennis Championships at the Fertitta Tennis Complex on the UNLV campus.

During the first day of play at the individual event, McCartney Kessler, Katie Kubicz and Peggy Porter dropped their respective opening round singles matches. Victoria Emma had a first-round bye and posted an impressive three-set win against Oklahoma State's Katie Stresnakova, 2-6, 7-6, 6-4, and march into the quarterfinals.

Kessler and Kubicz regrouped in their next match and recorded straight-set wins to advance to the consolation quarterfinals.

On the doubles court, Emma and Porter teamed against North Carolina's No. 51 Makenna Jones and Chloe Ouellet-Pizer but dropped a 7-5 decision. Kubicz and Kessler also were unsuccessful in their debut, dropped a 6-4 result to Stanford's Caroline Lampl and Kimberly Yee.

Doubles play begins Saturday's action.

"We started the day with doubles and we lost both after having leads in both. We improved in a week and that part is more important than anything.

"McCartney played well and showed poise to come back after dropping her first set and forced a third in her debut match. Kate needs to be less volatile in her play and I believe we will see improvement.

The 4-1-1 on the Freeman Memorial

This is an individual singles and doubles tournament.
Action begins with doubles each day at 1 p.m. ET/10 a.m. PST on Friday and Saturday with the finals scheduled for Sunday.
There are two flights of singles and two flights of doubles.
There will NOT be live scoring from the event.
Las Vegas is in the PACIFIC time zone (three hours behind EASTERN time zone) so results will be very late each evening.

Who's Competing

Athletes from eight different schools will be competing in the three-day event:

No. 1 Stanford, No. 3 Florida, No. 5 North Carolina, No. 6 Pepperdine, No. 12 Texas, No. 16 Oklahoma State and No. 17 UCLA. Host UNLV is scheduled to provide eight singles players and four doubles teams in the draws.
