Gators Start Strong at ITA Regionals; Crawford to compete for title in Harlingen
Saturday, October 20, 2018 | Men's Tennis
HARLINGEN, Texas/ ATHENS, Ga. – Sophomore Oliver Crawford has advanced through the singles draw of the USA F28 Futures tournament in Harlingen, Texas and will compete for a championship tomorrow.
Crawford earned a wildcard entry into the main draw instead of competing in the qualifying round. He has earned three straight wins, including a straight-set sweep of Texas A&M's Jordi Arconada (6-4, 6-0) to advance to the championship. The sophomore will compete in his first Futures final match tomorrow against Andrew Watson of Great Britain. Championship match is scheduled for 12:30 p.m. ET.
Thoughts from Assistant Coach Tanner Stump:
"Oliver continued his run here in Harlingen today with his most complete performance yet. He managed both the conditions and his emotions in a veteran type way which allowed him to be successful throughout the match. He has the benefit of playing a lot of different types of players here to continue to test him in unique ways, which has been great for his development. Tomorrow will be no different and he is looking forward to the challenge that will come his way."
ITA Regional Championships
The Gators started off strong in the main draw of the ITA Regional Championships.
Five of the six in the singles draw advanced to the second round. Sophomore Brian Berdusco lost his first round match and will move into the consolation bracket. Johannes Ingildsen, Andy Andrade and McClain Kessler earned straight-set victories, while Lukas Greif and Duarte Vale battled to three-set triumphs.
In doubles, all three Florida doubles pairs received a first round bye, automatically advancing them to second round action. Vale and Kessler dominated Thomas Guy and Luis Fernandez Labarta of FAU 8-1 to continue their run. Andrade and Greif cruised to an 8-4 victory over Georgia State's Andrei Duarte and Roberts Grinvalds, while Ingildsen and Berdusco battled Felipe Ramirez and Feliksas Sakalauskas of Florida Gulf Coast and a tiebreaker was forced, but the Gator duo advanced with an 8-7 [4] win.
