Gators send two tandems to doubles semifinals and three to singles quarterfinals
Updated Singles and Doubles and Consolation Bracket
ATLANTA – The University of Florida women's tennis team put together an impressive showing during its second day of competition at the ITA Southeastern Regional Saturday afternoon, advancing two doubles duos and three singles players into the tournament's next round.
Inclement weather brought the competition indoors but the Gators were unphased by the unexpected venue change as they were victors in seven of a possible eight matches on the day and posted an unblemished 4-0 mark on the doubles court.
The sophomore duo of Victoria Emma and McCartney Kessler and the Tsveta Dimitrova and Ida Jarlskog tandem each earned a spot in Sunday's doubles semifinals by winning a pair of matches. In singles, Emma, Kessler and Jarlskog all picked up victories to lock down a spot in Sunday's singles quarterfinals.
After a full day of tennis Friday, Florida's doubles teams returned to the court Saturday morning but didn't show any signs fatigue as they set the tone early with four victories.
Kessler/Emma began the day by defeating Georgia Southern's Hartig/Bujan, 8-3 and followed it up with an 8-4 victory over Perez-Somarriba/Ito of Miami. Jarlskog/Dimitrova earned an 8-4 win over De Winter/Boixader of Georgia Southern and in their second matchup the Gator duo knocked off Miami's Marzal Martinez/Madcur, 8-3.
The Gators' strong play on the doubles court spilled over onto the singles circuit where they earned three match victories. Jarlskog cruised to a 6-1, 6-1 victory over UCF's Natilia Serrano while Emma battled to a win (6-4, 6-4) over Rafaela Gomez of North Florida. Kessler defeated FSU's Milkulski (3-0, ret.) while freshman Marlee Zein fell short vs. Georgia junior Marta Gonzalez (6-1, 6-2).
Southeastern Regional action continues tomorrow, Sunday, Oct. 21 as singles play begins the day at 10 a.m.
Quotes from the Court (Head Coach Roland Thornqvist)
"Our fantastic doubles play was the highlight today. We're stronger holding serve and more of a nuisance returning now than in our last tournament. In singles, we're playing very well and we adapted to playing indoor tennis immediately today."
