Gators Drop Five-Set Battle to Missouri

Florida dropped its first SEC match of the season to third-place Missouri

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – The No. 11 Florida Gators fell to the Missouri Tigers on Sunday afternoon in Exactech Arena.

This was the first loss for Florida since Sept. 7, when the team dropped a five-setter to Northern Arizona.

Missouri took a close first set, 25-23, but Florida came storming back in the second to take the frame, 25-16. The Tigers then took set three, 25-17, but the Gators won the fourth, 25-13, to force a deciding fifth set. Missouri came out victorious in the final set, winning the frame 17-15.

One match after setting a new program record for most blocks in the rally scoring era, Florida once again showed up at the net, recording a new program-best 23.5 blocks.

Taelor Kellum recorded a career-best 13 blocks, while Rachael Kramer pitched in nine. Holly Carlton posted a season-best eight blocks and Thayer Hall added a career-high seven.

Rachael Kramer and Thayer Hall paced the offense for the Gators on Sunday afternoon, both finishing with 10 kills. Paige Hammons, Holly Carlton and Mia Sokolowski each pitched in nine of their own.  

Allie Monserez dished out a team-leading 23 assists, followed by 15 from Marlie Monserez

Four Gators in total recorded double-figure digs during the match. Allie Gregory controlled the backcourt with 14 digs, Thayer Hall followed with 12, Allie Monserez added 11 and Paige Hammons registered 10.

Thayer Hall (10 kills, 12 digs) and Allie Monserez (23 assists, 11 digs) both posted double-doubles on the night. That was Monserez's team-best ninth of the season.

The Gators are back in action on Sunday, Oct. 28 in Starkville, Miss. to take on Mississippi State at 12 p.m. CT on the SEC Network +.

How It Happened
  • Florida found itself down 15-11 at the media timeout in the first set, but went on an 8-2 run to take a 19-17 lead thanks in part to five kills and one block. Missouri then tied the set at 22-22 and finished the frame on a 3-1 run.   
    • The Gators hit .116 in the first set with 14 kills, but also recorded nine attack errors and three service errors. Mia Sokolowski led the way with five kills in the frame and Paige Hammons followed with three.  
  • The second set was a game of service runs for Florida. Allie Monserez went on a five-point service run to take 14-6 lead and Thayer Hall added a three-point service run to go up 18-7. Florida was able to close out the set thanks to five kills and two blocks.
  • Missouri got out to an early 8-3 lead over the Gators, but Florida battled back to tie the frame at 12-12. The Tigers would then go on a run of their own, taking the seven-point advantage at 21-14. Florida chipped away to make it 23-17, but Missouri closed it out with two kills to go up 2-1 in the match.
  • Florida controlled the entirety of the fourth set, taking a 15-7 lead thanks to five kills and eight Missouri errors. The Gators held at least a seven-point lead for the remainder of the set, clinching set point on a Missouri attack error.
  • The Gators got out to the early 5-0 start in the fifth set and held a 9-4 lead midway through. Missouri stayed in the frame though, chipping away until the set was tied 11-11. From that point on, neither team had more than a one point lead until the final play, when the Tigers won the match on a Florida attack error.
