Gators Wrap Fall with Win over Team USA
Sunday, November 18, 2018 | Baseball
The Gators concluded fall ball with an 8-1 win over USA Baseball's 18U National Team in Port Charlotte on Sunday.
The 18U National Team is comprised of the top high school players in the country and coached by Jack Leggett. Gators' head coach Kevin O'Sullivan served on Leggett's staff for nine years at Clemson from 1999-2007 before he was hired at UF.
Florida used a strong effort on the mound from six different pitchers, all underclassmen, and senior Nelson Maldonado had four RBI on a pair of hits, including a two-run homer in the first inning.
Sophomore Tommy Mace started and pitched three innings and only allowed one baserunner, via a walk, with three strikeouts. Jack Leftwich followed with two scoreless innings of his own.
The Gators added a run in the fourth inning with some sneaky baserunning. Freshman Kendrick Calilao pretended to trip and fall while taking off from first base and Austin Langworthy sprinted home from third – a trick play that should be familiar to UF fans after Florida executed it in the 2018 Super Regionals against Auburn.
Florida added three runs in the fifth inning on Maldonado's two-run single and a sac fly from Calilao. The final two runs came in the sixth inning on a RBI single from freshman Kris Armstrong and a wild pitch that allowed Roberto Pena to score from third.
Jordan Butler, Hunter McMullen and Christian Scott each pitched a scoreless frame out of the bullpen. Hunter Ruth allowed one run on four hits in the ninth inning.
