KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – The 13th-ranked Florida Gators fell to the 22nd-ranked Tennessee Lady Vols in three sets on Wednesday evening. This was the first match since 2011 that both teams found themselves ranked in the AVCA poll.
Florida moves to 23-6 on the year and 14-3 in the SEC, putting the Gators third overall in the league.
Tennessee won the first set, 25-22 and then won the second set, 25-16. The Lady Vols then topped Florida, 25-21 in the third set to secure the match.
Florida finished with seven blocks overall, with a team-best three coming from
Rachael Kramer,
Holly Carlton and
Taelor Kellum.
The Gators' offense was paced by Kramer, who recorded seven kills on the evening.
Paige Hammons and
Holly Carlton followed with six kills, while
Mia Sokolowski added five.
Allie Monserez led the Gators in setting for the 27th match this season, dishing out 15 assists on the evening.
Marlie Monserez added seven assists of her own, as well as three kills in the match.
Allie Gregory led the Gators' defensive effort in the backcourt, recording 18 digs.
The Gators return to action on Friday when they return home to face South Carolina in the final regular season match of the year. The match will serve as Senior Day for
Allie Monserez and
Taelor Kellum and first serve is slated for 7 p.m.
How it Happened
- Florida found itself down 8-4 early in the first set, but fought back to within one going into the media timeout. Coming out of the timeout, the Lady Vols went on a 5-2, taking a 20-16 lead, but Florida wasn't done battling. The Gators got within two at 22-20, but were unable to close the deficit, falling 25-20.
- Tennessee hopped out to the quick 7-2 lead in the second set, forcing Florida to use its first timeout. Out of the timeout, Mia Sokolowski got a big kill to bring the Gators within four, but then the Lady Vols went on a 9-2 run to extend their lead to 11. Florida was unable to cut the deficit to less than eight points the rest of the way and Tennessee went up 2-0 in the match.
- Florida hit .000 and only recorded six kills in the frame. Holly Carlton and Taelor Kellum both notched two kills apiece in the set.
- The Gators were down 10-5 in the third set, but went on a 5-0 run to even it up at 10-10. The teams continued to trade points, but the Lady Vols went on a short burst to take the 20-16 lead late. Florida was able to tie the frame at 21-all, but Tennessee closed on the set on a 4-0 run.
- UF registered a .081 hit clip in the third frame, posting 13 kills. Racheal Kramer led the way with five kills in the set.
