WHAT HAPPENED: No. 1 Florida scored 12 unanswered runs to beat No. 22 Auburn 12-3 on Saturday afternoon, clinching the series over the Tigers.
Â
The Gators are now 16-5 in the SEC and have won all seven league series thus far. Overall, UF has won 17 regular season series in a row dating back to last season.
Â
Auburn took a 3-0 lead in the first inning on Edouard Julien's three-run home run for the second game in a row, but this time the Gators battled back and won convincingly.
Â
Florida freshman
Jack Leftwich made his first career Southeastern Conference start and settled in after allowing the home run, keeping the Tigers off the board until he was replaced with two outs in the seventh.
Â
The Gators used a six-run fourth inning to take control of the game and scored in every frame the remainder of the contest.
Â
Trailing 3-1 in the fourth,
Nick Horvath lined a three-run double into the left center gap to put UF ahead for good.
Â
Deacon Liput went 2-for-3 with three RBI, including a two-run shot over the scoreboard, and
JJ Schwarz went 3-for-5 on the day.
Â
Leftwich was replaced in the seventh after 6.2 innings with four hits allowed and seven strikeouts.
Jordan Butler (1.1 IP) and
Michael Byrne (1.0 IP) finished off the Tigers.
Â
IN THE SPOTLIGHT:Â
Jack Leftwich – The freshman showed some nerves early, hitting the leadoff batter and walking the next batter before Julien's home run put the Gators behind. But after the homer Leftwich (pictured right) retired 19 of the next 22 hitters and kept the Tigers at bay. He finished with 6.2 innings and three runs allowed on four hits with seven strikeouts.
FROM THE COACH:Â
Head coach Kevin O'Sullivan on today's game: "It was the same start as yesterday [giving up a 3-run home run in the first inning]. I think for Jack to go back out and put a zero up on the board was huge for his confidence. He threw great, that says a lot about his maturity and his concentration level. He didn't get rattled obviously, with young pitchers sometimes they come unglued there, but he stayed the course and kept putting up zeros and he needed to. I thought [Auburn starter Andrew] Mitchell was sharp early on. We got the leadoff man on a few innings in a row and hit into a couple double plays that took us out of those innings. I was really pleased with how Jack threw the ball today."
Â
How much leash were you prepared to give Leftwich today?
"Not much to be honest with you. I ran Dyson down there in the first inning to get him going. You just don't know how they're going to respond in their first start, but he answered the bell and he did what he needed to do to give us a chance to win."
Â
