Gators Add 12 Eugene Qualifiers to Close NCAA East Preliminary
Saturday, May 26, 2018 | Track and Field
Florida enjoyed one of its most successful three days of qualifying in recent years at the NCAA East Preliminary
TAMPA, Fla. – Florida's men and women added 12 more NCAA Outdoor Championships qualifiers to close the NCAA East Preliminary Saturday. The Gators boast 30 entries for NCAA Outdoors, including freshman heptathlete Amanda Froeynes, whose spot was secure before the three-day qualifying meet began.
The Gators opened the day with season-best time of 38.86—also the nation's third-fastest time—from the men's 4x100 relay quartet of junior Michael Timpson Jr., freshman Chantz Sawyers, sophomore Grant Holloway, and junior Ryan Clark, punching their sixth consecutive ticket to NCAA Outdoors.
Holloway came back shortly thereafter and clocked the second-fastest qualifying time (13.58 seconds) in the 110-meter hurdles, ensuring he will defend his national title in Eugene. Also in the 110 hurdles, freshman Cory Poole nabbed the third and final time qualifying spot, giving the Gators two NCAA Outdoors qualifiers in the event for the first time since 2009, when William Wynne and Kallinka Pitt pulled it off.
Paired with his NCAA Outdoors berth in the 400-meter hurdles, Poole is the third Division I freshman since 2002 to qualify for nationals in both hurdle events. The only other two to accomplish the feat during that span are Houston's Amere Lattin (2016) and South Carolina's Ken Ferguson (2003). Poole is the first Gator since at least 1998 to successfully pull off that double as well.
Clark also came back and earned yet another spot at NCAA Outdoors, logging the seventh-fastest qualifying time (20.53) in the 200 meters. The College Park, Ga., native qualified in the 100 meters Friday, making him the first Gator since 2015 to qualify in both the short sprints.
Before the heaviest rainfall of the day started, junior Yanis David and senior Darrielle McQueen secured Eugene tickets in the triple jump. David's spot was never in doubt, but McQueen sat in the mid-teens entering her third and final attempt. The Tallahassee, Fla., native came through with a mark of 13.08 meters (42 feet, 11 inches), enabling her to finish seventh. The pair also qualified for the long jump Thursday night.
Through a torrential downpour, sophomore Clayton Brown and Jhonny Victor secured their second consecutive NCAA Outdoors berths in the high jump. Brown managed to clear 2.16 meters (7 feet, 1 inch) as the rain let up, and Victor secured his spot on countbacks, via a second-attempt clearance at 2.11 meters (6 feet, 11 inches).
Once the rain subsided, senior and defending national champion KeAndre Bates won the triple jump with the third-best mark in Division I this year (16.79 meters / 55 feet, 1 inch)—which improved his No. 5-ranked mark on the program's All-Time Top 10 list by four centimeters. Brown entered his third and final attempt outside the top 12, but rose to sixth to secure his second Eugene ticket of the day.
Brown remains just the fifth Division I man since 2010 to qualify for NCAA Outdoors in both the high jump and triple jump, and he's done it each of his two years as a Gator.
Both Florida's 4x400 relays teams fought through the rain to win their respective heats and automatically qualify.
The top 48 individual and top 24 relay declarations within the East and West Regions earned berths to their respective preliminary meet. The top 12 individuals and 12 relays from each regional advanced to the NCAA Outdoor Championships in Eugene, Ore., slated for June 6-9.
HEARING OUT (COACH) HOLLOWAY
Head coach Mike Holloway on how the Gators strung together their one of their strongest performances at this meet in recent years…
"I think the big thing was that we got this momentum going. It kind of started at the NCAA Indoor meet, and there's just a big focus with this group. To listen to AJ [McFarland] talk to them afterwards and talk about how much fun everyone is to be around, how much he loves his teammates, it's just been a pleasure for me as a coach to watch them gel and come together as a family. That's what you saw this weekend.
"Everybody who put the uniform on went out and competed hard—even those who didn't make it. Nobody came out here and lied down. That was fun to watch."
Coach Holloway on whether the Gators qualified everyone they need to in order to achieve their team goals at NCAA Outdoors…
"Absolutely. A couple people came really close that I would've loved to have seen there to get the experience. Those extra points are always good. But, we are who we are at this point; we qualified who we qualified. We're going to get back to Gainesville Monday, get everybody rested and healthy, then go out to Eugene and do the best we can."
