Avione Allgood won her fifth consecutive meet against collegiate competition.
Gators Open NCAA East Preliminary with 9 Eugene Berths
Thursday, May 24, 2018 | Track and Field
Florida also advanced 11 of its 17 runners in preliminary track events
TAMPA, Fla. – Florida opened the NCAA East Preliminary by qualifying nine for the NCAA Outdoor Championships.
The day started on the highest of notes, as all three men's hammer throwers punched tickets to Eugene. Junior Anders Eriksson and freshman Thomas Mardal, respectively ranked third and ninth nationally, were not surprises. But redshirt junior AJ McFarland entered Thursday as the No. 14 seed in the East Region, meaning, on paper, his personal record would not be enough to extend his season. McFarland came seven centimeters shy of his PR, but it was good enough for an 11th-place finish and a spot at the NCAA Outdoor Championships.
The trio made Florida the second team since 2012 and 10th team since 1999 to send three hammer throwers to the NCAA Outdoor Championships. It is the first time in school history three Gators achieved the feat.
Sixth-year senior Avione Allgood secured her first trip to NCAA Outdoors since 2014, when she was a sophomore at Oklahoma. Allgood won the javelin throw by 54 centimeters, giving her a fifth consecutive victory against collegiate competition.
This is the sixth consecutive year Florida has qualified a women's javelin thrower for NCAA Outdoors, something only Nebraska and Stanford can lay claim to as well.
The fifth thrower of the day to secure an NCAA Outdoors berth was senior Lloydricia Cameron, who was the shot put runner-up. The Miami, Fla. native will make her third consecutive trip to Eugene, joining her with Mariam Kevkhishvili (2007-10) as the only other Gator in the last 13 years to qualify for three NCAA Outdoors in the shot put.
Senior KeAndre Bates and sophomore Grant Holloway were far from their season bests in the men's long jump, but took eighth and ninth, respectively, to qualify for NCAA Outdoors. The pair combined for a 1-2 finish at last year's NCAA Outdoors.
Following a lengthy lightning delay, junior Yanis David and senior Darrielle McQueen both punched Eugene tickets in the women's long jump. It is McQueen's fourth NCAA Outdoors long jump berth in as many seasons, while it will be David's second in three years.
On the track, the Gators advanced 11 of their 17 runners to NCAA East Preliminary finals.
Florida's day also saw freshman Enzo Hodebar (long jump) and redshirt junior Megan Reed (javelin throw) finish 13th in their events, missing NCAA Outdoors by the narrowest of margins. Reed was passed on the competition's final throw, while Hodebar was at the bottom end of a four-way tie for 10th place.
The top 48 individual and top 24 relay declarations within the East and West Regions earned berths to their respective preliminary meet. The top 12 individuals and 12 relays from each regional competition advance to the NCAA Outdoor Championships in Eugene, Ore., slated for June 6-9.
FloTrack will continue to provide live streaming for the final two days of competition, though it requires a paid subscription. Links to the streaming information, as well as ticketing and additional meet information are below.
