TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – University of Florida women's tennis junior McCartney Kessler knocked off Georgia's Elena Christofi, 6-2, 7-6 Saturday, highlighting the Gators' second day of competition at the ITA Southeast Regional Championships hosted by Florida State.
No. 23 Kessler, one of three Gator student-athletes to compete on the day, held the upperhand in a matchup between the two nationally ranked and All-SEC talents, defeating No. 113 Christofi in straight sets.
With the win, Kessler secures a spot in Sunday's main draw quarterfinal round where she will take on Georgia Tech junior Victoria Flores.
The UF tandem of Tsveta Dimitrova and Sydney Berlin kicked off the day with a match in the round of 32 of doubles play. Taking on the Florida State duo of freshman Sasha Hill and junior Petra Hule, Dimitrova and Berlin dropped the decision 8-2.
Dimitrova returned to the courts a few hours later for a match in the singles consolation bracket, squaring off against Georgia's Morgan Coppoc. The senior Dimitrova and the junior Coppoc battled in a highly competitive bout, but it was Coppoc who walked away with a win via tiebreak, 3-6, 6-4, 10/8.
For Kessler, Saturday marked her second win over a ranked foe this fall season and her season win total grows to 13. The Calhoun, Georgia native has now advanced to the ITA Southeast Regional Quarterfinal in consecutive seasons.

Takeaways
"McCartney is continuing to improve with every match she plays. She did a great job sticking to the game plan and being disciplined in her shot selection. Tsveta came up a little short in her match, but made some major strides this tournament in the way she competed on court. Tomorrow will be another good test for us, and the Gators are looking forward to the battle."
