Vale then went on to face UCF's No. 84 Alan Rubio, the draw's No. 11 seed, in the round of 16, as he would drop the first set (6-4) before besting Rubio in the next two sets, 4-6, 6-2, 6-2, to add a ranked win and secure his spot in the quarterfinals.
