FORT MYERS, Fla. – University of Florida women's tennis players
Sydney Berlin and
Tsveta Dimitrova combined for three singles wins and a doubles victory as the pair completed their first day of competition at the Bedford Cup on the campus of Florida Gulf Coast University Friday.
Berlin went a perfect 2-0 in singles play while teaming up with Dimitrova for a victory over Sandra Bozinovic and Maria Turrillo of FIU on the doubles circuit.
The Gators began the day in the win column as Dimitrova and Berlin, playing together for the first time, earned a 6-3 victory.
Florida split the opening round of singles action as Berlin defeated UNF's Sean Lodzki while Dimitrova fell in a tiebreak, 1-6, 6-2, 10-8, to Natalia Boltinskaya of FAU.
In the second round, Florida finished with a perfect 2-0 mark. Berlin cruised to a 6-4, 6-1 win over FGCU junior Lourdes Ramalle and Dimitrova got back on track, defeating Stetson's Brooke Milner, 6-3, 6-4.
Making her fall season debut, Berlin didn't show any signs of rust, winning both her matches in straight sets.
The Gators return to the courts Saturday for the second day of competition which begins with doubles action at 8 a.m. ET. The Florida duo is slated to play two doubles matches on the day.
