TULSA, Okla. – The Gators completed the first day of qualifying singles action at the ITA All-American Championships on Monday, as three of the four Gators competing in the qualifying draw picked up wins to keep their main draw hopes alive in Tulsa.
Johannes Ingildsen,
Josh Goodger and
Lukas Greif all claimed opening wins on the day, though, junior
Brian Berdusco unfortunately came up short in a resilient three-set battle.
No. 64
Johannes Ingildsen, the No. 7 seed in the qualifying draw, would be the first to get things going on the day for the Gators in facing Oklahoma's Stefano Tsoriotis, who earned entry into the draw through prevailing through pre-qualifying play. Ingildsen would however cut Tsoriotis' run short, downing the Sooner decisively in straight sets, 6-4, 6-1, to cruise into the second round.
No. 70
Lukas Greif, the draw's No. 12 seed, then turned in the next win for Florida with a commanding 6-1, 6-1 victory to knock off Purdue's Mateo Julio in first round action.
Former Hurricane No. 68
Josh Goodger, a No. 10 seed, enjoyed a competitive opening matchup in his homecoming to Tulsa, as the junior met Nevada's Julien Evrard in the first round.
Goodger opened with a 7-5 decision in the first set, though, Evrard retaliated with a 6-3 effort in the second to force a third set. However, Goodger would take command and go on to finish Evrard in the third set, 6-3, advancing to the second round.
Brian Berdusco was the last Gator remaining on the court by the end of the prior two matches, seeing a tough matchup in Minnesota's No. 93 Stefan Milicevic, a No. 25 seed in the qualifying draw.
After falling in the first set, 7-5, Berducso would dig deep in fighting off a 5-4 deficit to return the favor and overcome Milicevic in the second set, 7-5. With the match on the line, Milicevic proved to have the hot hand, as he would go on to down Berdusco, 6-2, in the third to move on to the qualifying draw's second round.
