GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Robert Finke led a group of five University of Florida swimmers in the 800 free on the first day the 2019 Toyota U.S. Open at the McAuley Aquatic Center in Atlanta, Ga.
Finke would finish with the fourth-fastest time and an Olympic trial cut, hitting the wall in 7:54.29. The time is just six seconds off his personal-best set this past summer at the Phillips 66 Nationals.
Teammate Kieran Smith would also add an Olympic trial cut in heat 2. The sophomore would register a swim of 8:01.46, good for third-place in the heat and 10th-place overall.
Advait Page joined Smith in heat 2 and would tally a seventh-place heat finish with his time of 8:07.94 (t-25th overall).
Matthew Anderson and Brennan Gravley were the final two Gators to compete in the event.
Anderson produced a time of 8:15.34, just .34 seconds from a runner-up bid in heat 5, while Gravley hit the water in heat 3, posting a time of 8:18.37 and a ninth-place finish in his respective heat.
Day two will begin Thursday morning at 10:00 a.m. with the women's 400 free. The top-24 times from the morning will qualify for the finals at 7 p.m. later that evening.
