GAINESVILLE, Fla.— Kieran Smith and former Gator All-American Ryan Lochte reeled in Florida's first medals of the 2019 Toyota U.S. Open during the second day of competition in Atlanta.
Smith earned a silver medal with his Olympic trial cut swim of 3:47.72 in the 400 free. The time is a new LCM lifetime-best and was almost four full seconds faster than his prelim time of 3:51.44.
Lochte earned a bronze for his effort in the 200 IM A-final, hitting the wall in 1:58.89 and notching an Olympic trial cut in the process.
Smith also hit the water with Lochte in the A-final, registering a fifth-place finish (2:00.13).
Former Gator All-American Caeleb Dressel and Grant Sanders also competed in the event, qualifying for the B-final.
Dressel would go on to hit a new personal-best in the event, touching the wall in 1:59.97. The swim was good for the sixth-fastest overall.
Sanders would just miss out on a new personal-best, finishing the event with an Olympic trial cut of 2:01.75.
Coming off his performance in the 800 free yesterday, Robert Finke was able to find success in the 400 free B-final, posting a runner-up bid with his swim of 3:52.78 , which secured him an Olympic trial cut. The time was the eighth-fastest overall in the final.
Alum Mitch D'Arrigo was able to qualify for the C-final in the 400 free, posting a third-place finals finish with his swim of 3:54.36.
In the morning prelims, Khader Baqlah, Matthew Anderson and Brennan Gravley competed in the 400 free, with Baqlah notching an Olympic trial cut (3:54.31), Anderson finishing in 4:01.29 and Gravley tallying an effort of 4:02.83.
A pair of Gators represented the orange and blue in the 200 IM.
Marco Guarente would post a 41st-place finish with his time of 2:06.03, while Gerry Quinn finished behind him in 47th (2:06.62).
The 50 Free, the last individual event of the day, featured former Gators Bayley Main (23.38) Martinez-Scarpe (22.94) and Baqlah, who rounded out the performers with a swim of 23.26
Day three will start right back up at 10:00 a.m. on Friday with the women's 400 IM prelims.
