BOX SCORE
CHICAGO – Florida responded to falling into the consolation bracket with a dominating 4-1 win over Illinois at the ITA National Team Indoor Championships on Saturday.
The No. 4 Gators grabbed the early advantage with the doubles point. McClain Kessler and Duarte Vale cruised to a 6-3 win on court one and Oliver Crawford and Sam Riffice followed with a 6-3 victory of their own.
In singles, Illinois took four of the first sets and No. 24 Aleks Kovacevic tied the match with a 2-set decision over No. 20 Crawford on court one. Johannes Ingildsen continued his perfect start to the dual season, with yet another win on court four. He defeated No. 125 Keenan Mayo to put Florida back in the lead. Almost immediately, the Gators added one more as Andy Andrade bounced back from his tough loss against USC with a decisive 2-set victory of No. 30 Zeke Clark. Riffice used a come-from-behind three setter over No. 23 Alex Brown to clinch the win for Florida.
The Gators avenged an embarrassing 0-4 loss to Illinois at last year's ITA National Team Indoor Championships in Seattle and move to 7-11 all-time against the Fighting Illini. The two teams will meet again in just over a month when Illinois travels to Gainesville.
Up next, Florida will face Stanford in the final consolation match of the ITA National Team Indoor Championships. Stanford (6-2) fell in the opening round to Virginia, but bounced back with a 4-0 win over Tulane. First serve for match between the Cardinals and the Gators will be 7:30 p.m. ET on Sunday.
Gator Quotes
"We played a very gritty match tonight. I knew we would come out and compete hard again. This team loves the game and loves playing together. Illinois is a very good team and we have a lot of respect for them. We'll face a very good Stanford team tomorrow. It will be important for us to play smart and aggressive again tomorrow night. Our guys are learning to blend their tools together on this indoor surface. We are a very young team and we will continue to get better every single day." – Head Coach Bryan Shelton
