Women’s tennis looks to get back to its winning ways as it squares off with the Sooners.
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – The University of Florida women's tennis team resumes dual match action when it hosts the Oklahoma Sooners Friday evening at the Ring Tennis Complex. Match time is slated for 5 p.m. ET as the Gators play their second home match of the week.
Admission to all regular-season home matches is free and parking restrictions will be lifted for the law school parking lot at 3:30 p.m. on Friday. New this season, the concession stand will feature grilled items for all matches.
The Gators return to the court after falling Tuesday at home to in-state foe Florida State, 4-1. UF, featuring its full roster for the first time, came up short in doubles and was unable to break through in singles as the visiting Seminoles claimed their third-straight victory in the series. Sophomore Ida Jarlskog, competing at the team's No. 1 positon for the second match in a row, registered UF's lone point of the match as she earned a 6-2, 6-2 win. The Georgia Tech transfer has recorded a team-high three wins in singles. On the doubles side, key returnees McCartney Kessler and Victoria Emma teamed up for the first time during the dual match campaign.
No. 12 Jarlskog, No. 33 Kessler and No. 52 Emma all earned spots in this week's ITA Singles rankings.
Oklahoma enters the matchup sporting a 5-2 record, and fell 5-2 to Texas A&M in its last matchup this past Sunday. Texas A&M is one of three SEC squads the Sooners have battled this season as they lost at Vanderbilt, 4-3, and won at Arkansas, 4-0. Junior Oleksandra Korashvili is the lone Sooner in the ITA rankings as the junior comes in at No. 60. She competes primarily at the No. 2 position.
Both teams are ranked within the ITA's top 50 as Oklahoma comes in at No. 28 and Florida, No. 48.
Friday marks just the second meeting between the programs and first since the teams met in 1981 in Gainesville.
Following Friday's competition, Florida travels to Lake Nona, Fla. to battle UCF as part of the USTA's College Match Day festivities. Sunday's match, which begins at 5:30 p.m. ET, will be broadcast live on the Tennis Channel.
College MatchDay is a series of marquee neutral-site college tennis matches designed to showcase some of the nation's top collegiate tennis programs. The event is free and will feature a Net Generation kids' clinic, as well as additional kids activities, live music, specialty food and drinks, games and giveaways at the USTA National Campus. Three College MatchDay events so far this season have averaged more than 1,000 fans.
The USTA National Campus will also host the NCAA Division I Men's and Women's Tennis Championships May 16-25.
