Yanis David captured Florida's first SEC Indoors long jump title since 2010.
David Wins Title as Gators Open SEC Indoors with Four Medals
Friday, February 22, 2019 | Track and Field
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Florida collected four medals—two apiece by the men's and women's teams—at the SEC Indoor Championships Friday night, which was highlighted by senior Yanis David's long jump title and junior Grant Holloway's all-around showing in three events.
David had the title locked up prior to her sixth jump, but she leapt all the way to an NCAA-leading 6.46 meters (21 feet, 2.5 inches) on her final attempt. That jump put her 15 centimeters clear of the field for her first career SEC title.
David's title is the fourth in program history, with the last coming from Olympian Shara Proctor in 2010.
Holloway's attempt to claim a historic three individual titles ended with a runner-up finish in the long jump, though his night was incredibly impressive. In addition to the silver medal, his highest finish in the event at SEC Indoors, Holloway clocked the sixth-fastest 60-meter hurdles time in collegiate history (7.48 seconds – also a meet record) and the fastest qualifying time in the 60 meters (6.57 seconds). Holloway came just two centimeters shy of gold in the long jump.
Florida's other two medals came from its distance medley relay teams. The women's quartet of freshman Gabrielle Wilkinson, sophomore Nikki Stephens, sophomore Abbie Harrelson, and freshman Imogen Barrett combined for a runner-up finish. It marked the Gators' first top-six finish since 2014, when they won the title.
The men's DMR team of redshirt junior Jack Guyton, redshirt senior Jabari Hill, junior Justin Pacifico, and redshirt junior Magnus Pettersen clocked a season-best time en route to a bronze medal. It marked Florida's first podium finish since 2014, when it crossed second.
The Gators' men also scored 10 points with a pair of fourth-place finishes from redshirt sophomore Connor Bandel (shot put) and redshirt senior Jhonny Victor (high jump).
Victor's finish was especially impressive, as it came in an insanely-deep high jump field. The Orlando, Fla., native cleared a personal record of 2.22 meters (7 feet, 3.25 inches), tying the nation's No. 11-ranked mark and likely securing a spot at the NCAA Indoor Championships.
Florida's men also enjoyed a stellar day of qualifying, setting them up for a run at the team title Saturday. The Gators advanced all four of their entrants in the 60, two apiece in the 200 meters, 400 meters and 60 hurdles, along with senior Sam Ahrenholz in the mile.
On the women's side, top-five finishes by senior Sharrika Barnett (400 meters), Barrett (mile), and Wilkinson (800 meters) pushed them through to Saturday finals.
QUOTABLE
Yanis David on her first SEC title…
"It feels great. After three years of being here and not winning an SEC title, it gets a little bit in your head. But I trusted (Assistant) Coach (Nic) Petersen and myself today, and I knew I could do it. I didn't know how far I'd go, but I knew I could go out there, do my best and jump far. I know I can jump farther."
David on the emotions she let out after her final jump…
"It was frustration and happiness mixed together. I had three jumps at 6.36 (meters), and I was completely over it. That last jump, I really wanted to win with a further distance. I knew I had won (going into the last jump), but I wasn't satisfied with it. I wanted to go farther than that. I went for it."
Head coach Mike Holloway on the medals won by the distance medley relay teams…
"They're the last events of the day and it gives us momentum going into tomorrow. Neither were ranked that high, and for them to come out and perform the way they did, I thought it was indicative of who we are. They came out and just fought.
Coach Holloway on David's first SEC title…
"The biggest thing was that she came through big on her last jump. Very happy for her. More than anything else (the emotional response) was because she finally nailed a good jump and knows there is more there. That's just Yanis being Yanis."
Coach Holloway on Grant Holloway's day as a whole…
"If we're going to do (all three events), we have to go big on our first two jumps, because he ran out of juice. That's just something that is natural. We have to help him get locked in better on his first two jumps. Grant had a phenomenal day."
