Calilao Powers Gators to Series Win

WHAT HAPPENED: Kendrick Calilao, who celebrated his 19th birthday on Sunday, had a home run and two RBI to power the Gators to a 4-1 victory over Miami in Gainesville, clinching a series win over the Canes.

Calilao, a freshman from Kissimmee, went 7-for-12 on the weekend and totaled six RBI. He has a four-game hitting streak following the weekend series.

Florida struck first on Sunday, scoring in the opening inning for just the second time this year. Austin Langworthy drew a one-out walk and then scored on a two-out single from Calilao.

Miami evened it up in the fourth on a solo home run from Adrian Del Castillo. The visitors then loaded the bases with two outs after the homer but UF starter Jack Leftwich escaped the jam with a strikeout to end the threat.

Florida retook the lead in the bottom half of the fourth. Cory Acton singled, his second hit of the day, and advanced to third on Blake Reese's single to right. The throw back to the infield got away from Miami shortstop Freddy Zamora, allowing Acton to score from third for a 2-1 lead.

Calilao extended the lead with his first career home run, an opposite field shot to right in the sixth inning.

Leftwich was finished after five innings with the lone run allowed via the solo shot. He struck out seven and walked two.

Jordan Butler and Nolan Crisp combined for four scoreless innings out of the bullpen to finish off Miami. Crisp has totaled four saves in the Gators' first five wins.

IN THE SPOTLIGHT:  Gators' Bullpen – Once again the Florida bullpen proved vital in the weekend series. Four pitchers combined for 11 innings with just two earned runs allowed for a 1.64 earned run average. They also totaled nine strikeouts and just two walks.

FROM THE COACH: Head Coach Kevin O'Sullivan – On Kendrick Calilao's performance this weekend: "He's always hit ... he stays balanced, his BP is always on point. I think the most interesting thing, he had a great weekend stat-wise, but he's using the whole field. He hit a home run to right then had an extra-base hit down the left field line. Miami did a really nice job going back and forth, I think they changed their plan after the first couple of at bats on Friday. I thought he did a really nice job making some in-game adjustments."

On the team responding in the final two games of the series: "I think Wil's at bat [in the seventh inning on Saturday] changed the whole complexion of the weekend to be honest with you. It got the fans into it. It's frustrating [for the fans], they're watching us play and getting four hits and scoring a run or two each game – it gets a little frustrating for everybody. I thought his at bat kind of loosened everybody up and it got the fans energized. It set the tone coming into today."

FROM THE PLAYERS: Freshman Kendrick Calilao – On his performance Sunday: "It's just part of the game, people get into grooves and you just continue to hit the ball and you feel good at the plate. You play your best when you're not thinking and I'm kind of at that stage right now. At the beginning of the season we started off struggling but we're starting to pick it up a little bit and getting a feel for it."

STANDOUT STAT: 5 – The Gators have won five series in a row against Miami dating back to 2015. Florida has not lost a series to Miami in Gainesville since 2009.

UP NEXT: Florida travels to Jacksonville on Tuesday to face the Dolphins at 6 p.m. at John Sessions Stadium. The game will broadcast live on ESPN+ and the Gator Sports Network.
