Women’s tennis hosts Ole Miss and Mississippi State to begin SEC action.
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – The No. 43 University of Florida women's tennis team will host a pair of matches this weekend at the Alfred A. Ring Tennis Complex as it begins Southeastern Conference play. The Gators first battle Ole Miss on Friday, March 1 at 5 p.m. and conclude the weekend Sunday, March 3 with a matchup against Mississippi State.
Admission to all regular-season home matches is free and parking restrictions will be lifted for the law school parking lot at 3:30 p.m. on Friday. New this season, the concession stand will feature grilled items for all matches.
Sunday marks Kid's Day at the Ring as there will be plenty of fun-filled activities for children including poster marking, cornhole, mini tennis, face painting and a free tennis clinic following the match. In addition, Sunday will be a "pink" match for the Gators as they don special pink jerseys in support of breast cancer awareness. Make sure to get there early as there will be a limited amount of free pink travel mugs for fans.
UF returns to the courts following its non-conference finale at No. 30 UCF this past Sunday. Squaring off with the Knights as part of the USTA's College MatchDay in Lake Nona, the Gators got off to a strong start nabbing the doubles point, but ended up dropping the decision 4-3. Nationally ranked sophomores No. 52 Victoria Emma and No. 12 Ida Jarlskog both picked up victories in singles vs. the in-state foe, but the Gators couldn't hold on in the deciding match on court six.
Jarlskog, after recording a total of three wins including a match clincher vs. No. 28 Oklahoma last week, earned SEC Player of the Week honors. The Gators were picked to finish third in the SEC Preseason Coaches' Poll which was issued in January.
No. 12 Jarlskog, No. 52 Emma and No. 33 McCartney Kessler all represent the Gators in the ITA rankings.
Ole Miss, pegged to finish fifth in SEC Preseason Coaches' Poll, enters the weekend sporting a 3-3 overall record and also fell in its most recent matchup to the UCF Knights. Friday will be the Rebels first road challenge as they opened the dual conference slate with six straight matches in Oxford. Ole Miss features one ITA-ranked player as sophomore Sabina Machalova comes in at No. 125. In doubles, the Rebels have a pair of ranked tandems with No. 37 Alexa Bortles/Isolde de Jong and No. 59 Sabina Machalova/Tea Jandric.
Florida holds a 46-3 mark against the Rebels all time which includes a 20-0 record in matches played in Gainesville. The Gators have won 12 in a row in the series, including last season when they knocked off the Rebels 4-3 in Oxford.
Mississippi State, which will open SEC action at South Carolina Friday, carries a 9-3 record into the weekend.
MSU saw its seven match win streak snapped at the hands of South Florida last timeout as the Bulldogs fell 5-2 to the Bulls in Tampa. The Bulldogs, slated to finish 10th in the SEC Preseason Coaches' Poll, feature two in the ITA rankings with No. 89 Magda Adaloglou and No. 104 Emma Antonaki both cracking the ledger.
The Gators tout a 39-0 mark against the Bulldogs and 18 of those victories have occurred in matches played in Gainesville. Florida earned a 4-0 win in Starkville when the squads met a season ago.
Following this weekend's action, the Gators travel to Arkansas and Missouri next weekend as they continue conference competition.
