Gators Split for Arkansas, Iowa State Meets
Thursday, February 7, 2019 | Track and Field
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Florida's highly-ranked track and field teams will compete at two different meets, for what is expected to be a prime weekend to collect qualifying marks for the NCAA Indoor Championships.
Most of the Gators, No. 3 on the men's side and No. 4 on the women's side of the national rankings, are off to Arkansas for the Tyson Invitational, while the distance corps heads to the Iowa State Classic to partake in some of the season's fastest distance races.
Florida's headliners for the Tyson Invitational are Yanis David and Grant Holloway. David, who is tied for the NCAA lead in the long jump, will compete in both horizontal jumps. She is the top-ranked returner and two-time NCAA Indoors silver medalist in the triple jump, which she will compete in for the first time this season. Holloway, the world leader in both the 60 meters and 60-meter hurdles, returns to his signature event Friday. During this week last season, Holloway set the 60 hurdles collegiate record of 7.42 seconds.
Other Gators ranked in the top 10 nationally scheduled to compete in Arkansas are: Sharrika Barnett (No. 6 – 400 meters), Clayton Brown (No. 7 – triple jump), Ryan Clark (t-No. 9 – 60 meters), Asa Garcia (No. 8 – triple jump), Natricia Hooper (No. 5 – triple jump), Thomas Mardal (No. 7 – weight throw), AJ McFarland (No. 5 – weight throw), Cory Poole (t-No. 8 – 60-meter Hurdles), Hakim Sani Brown (t-No. 9 – 60 meters).
Florida's 4x400 relay squads, which are No. 3 and No. 9 in the men's and women's rankings, respectively, will be in action as well.
The top Gators runner headed to Iowa State is redshirt junior Jessica Pascoe, who broke the indoor 5,000 meters school record by 24-plus seconds in December. Pascoe ranks 12th nationally in the 5k and will vie for a 3,000 meters qualifying time Friday.
SEC Network + will provide live streaming for the Tyson Invitational, while FloTrack will stream the Iowa State Classic, though, a paid subscription is required.
