Women's tennis concludes lengthy road swing with matchups at No. 23 LSU and No. 12 Texas A&M.
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – The No. 31 University of Florida women's tennis team concludes its season-long four-match road swing when it travels to No. 23 LSU Friday and No. 12 Texas A&M Sunday as it participates in its final two road matches of the 2019 dual campaign.
The Gators and Tigers square off at 5 p.m. ET at the LSU Tennis Complex on Friday and Florida wraps up its weekend with a 1 p.m. tilt with the Aggies at the Mitchell Tennis Center on Sunday.
Florida Match Notes
Florida (7-8, 4-4) returns to action after falling short in a pair of matchups last weekend at No. 23 Kentucky and No. 5 Vanderbilt. The Gators were a few breaks away from winning both matches, but fell 4-3 in each contest. Against the Wildcats, Florida came out as the aggressor by claiming the doubles point and building a 3-2 edge, but couldn't hold on. Squaring off against the 2018 National Runner-Up and defending SEC champion Commodores, the Gators fought gallantly to come back from a 3-0 deficit, but were not able to come through in the end in their seventh 4-3 verdict this season.
The Gators, 4-4, enter the contest tied for sixth in the SEC standings with LSU.
A pair of sophomores continue to pace the Gators in singles as No. 16 Ida Jarlskog leads the club with a 10-3 record while No. 38 McCartney Kessler has posted five wins in a row and an overall mark of 8-5. On the doubles circuit Florida has registered a 16-16 record, nabbing seven doubles points. The transfer tandem of Jarlskog and Tsveta Dimitrova has proven to be UF's most formidable combo as they have played to a 7-3 record competing primarily at the No. 2 position.
Florida is in the midst of a stretch of four straight road matches against four straight top 25 teams. Following this weekend's action Florida will have taken on eight consecutive top 50 teams.
No. 23 LSU (14-6, 4-4) snapped a four-match slide with a pair of victories at Arkansas and Missouri last weekend to bring them back to .500 in conference action. The Tigers are 8-2 in home matches and their two defeats came at the hands of Florida's two most recent opponents, Kentucky and Vanderbilt. The Tigers tout two ranked singles players in No. 10 Eden Richardson and No. 60 Jessica Golovin. The sophomore Richardson and the senior Golovin combined to claim the program's first ever NCAA Doubles Championship a season ago and enter the weekend as the ITA's No. 10 doubles pairing. The Tigers are under the direction of co-head coaches Julie and Michael Sell. The former Julie Scaringe enjoyed a decorated career as a Florida Gator, playing under Coach Thornqvist and competing for Florida at the No. 1 position during their 2003 NCAA National Championship season.
In a series that dates back to 1975, Florida holds a 46-1 edge over the Tigers with its lone loss coming in Baton Rouge during the 2009 season.
No. 12 Texas A&M (18-3, 6-2) enters the weekend riding a four-match winning streak and sits in a tie for third place with Vanderbilt in the SEC standings. The Aggies host South Carolina on Friday before welcoming the Gators to town. TAMU is yet to drop a decision at home, posting a 13-0 record in matches played in College Station. No. 50 Kayla Townsend and No. 106 Jayci Goldsmith both represent the Aggies in the ITA singles rankings. Altogether Texas A&M features three ranked doubles units with No. 55 Renee McBryde and Townsend holding the highest position at No. 55.
Florida holds a 7-2 mark in the series which began in 2013, the same season the Aggies joined the SEC. Florida has won the last six meetings after falling to the Aggies in the 2014 SEC Tournament.
Following this weekend's play, Florida returns to the friendly confines of the Alfred A. Ring Tennis Complex where it will play its final four matches of the season.
