Women's tennis squares off against Michigan Thursday to kick off action-packed week.
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – The No. 26 University of Florida women's tennis team (10-9, 7-5) is set to host its first of three home matches this week when it battles No. 14 Michigan Thursday, April 11 at 5 p.m. ET at the Alfred A. Ring Tennis Complex. As part of #WeChompWeekend (April 10-14), Florida's campus will feature 10 different Gators sports events, highlighted by the Orange & Blue Game, Presented by Sunniland, at 1 p.m. on Saturday, April 13.
The first 100 fans in attendance will receive a special Florida women's tennis coffee mug and complimentary coffee will be available while supplies last. Admission to all regular-season home matches is free and parking restrictions will be lifted for the law school parking lot at 3:30 p.m.
Note: Head Coach Roland Thornqvist announced Tuesday that Florida will host Savannah State (3-16, 1-4) on Saturday, April 13 at 5 p.m. at the Ring Tennis Complex. The match will be the Gators' second of the day as they will also battle No. 5 South Carolina at 10 a.m. in their SEC finale.
Match Notes
After splitting a pair of contests with No. 43 Alabama and No. 49 Auburn at home this past weekend, Florida returns to the Ring to conclude its 2019 regular season with a three-match homestand. Playing without the services of sophomore McCartney Kessler, Florida was unable to shake off a slow start and dropped a 4-1 decision to Alabama despite having several courts in contention when the match was clinched. The Gators responded on Sunday though as they overcame an early 2-1 deficit and returned to their winning ways with a 4-2 victory over Auburn.
No. 10 Ida Jarlskog continues to lead the charge with a team-best 12 wins at UF's top singles position. Jarlskog clinched Florida's win over Auburn by defeating No. 103 Jaeda Daniel 3-6, 6-2, 6-2, giving her her ninth victory over a ranked foe this season.
After earning the match-clinching win at No. 12 Texas A&M the weekend prior, No. 94 Emma carried her momentum into UF's contests against Alabama and Auburn as she went undefeated in singles and doubles. Emma continues to excel and find a second gear late in matches as she is outscoring opponents 11-0 in her last two third sets. In doubles, Emma saw her match vs. Selim/Gintrand of Alabama go unfinished on Friday but paired up with classmate McCartney Kessler to pick up a 6-4 win over Griffin/Turner of Auburn to help the Gators grab the doubles point. No. 51 Emma/Kessler lead the Gators with six SEC victories this season, competing at the top spot.
Sydney Berlin kept her team-best three-match winning streak alive by earning a singles win over Auburn on Sunday. The Buffalo, N.Y. native has come on strong, playing to a 3-2 record in SEC matches and against Auburn helped spur a Gator comeback with a victory at the No. 6 position. In doubles, Berlin and teammate Marlee Zein battled to a 6-2 win and helped Florida secure the doubles point vs. the Tigers.
All three contests loom large in terms of Florida's potential eligibility for the NCAA Tournament as it enters the week one game above .500.
No. 14 Michigan (13-4, 9-0) sits atop the B1G standings and has won its last eight matches. The Wolverines feature four in the top 100 of the ITA Singles rankings with No. 3 Kate Fahey, No. 44 Chiara Lommer and No. 45 Brienne Minor holding the top rankings. The senior Fahey is the reigning Big Ten Athlete of the Year and has over 100 career singles wins. Fahey and Minor pair up to form the nation's 25th ranked doubles duo and are a perfect 8-0 in dual match competition.
Florida holds a 4-0 edge in the all-time series vs. the Wolverines, and all four contests have been played at a neutral site. The teams last squared off in 2017 when No. 1 Florida earned a 4-1 win over No. 13 Michigan at the National Team Indoor Championships in New Haven, Conn.
Depending on this weekend's SEC results, Florida can finish as high as fifth and as low as seventh in the SEC standings. The Gators enter the weekend in sixth and Kentucky (7-4) and Texas A&M (7-4) sit in a tie for fifth. Both the Wildcats and Aggies have two remaining league matchups on the docket compared to Florida's one. Florida owns the tiebreaker over Texas A&M but not Kentucky.
