Gators Steal Series with Walk-Off Winner

WHAT HAPPENED: Jordan Butler's three-run home run in the bottom of the ninth propelled the Gators to a 6-4 win on Saturday evening at McKethan Stadium in Gainesville.

The win clinched the series over South Carolina after the Gators won 9-5 on Thursday night.

Butler hit two home runs Saturday, the first two of his career, and had four RBI. David Luethje pitched 4.1 scoreless innings out of the bullpen to earn the win.

South Carolina scored first on a solo home run from Brady Allen in the second inning. Butler's opposite field shot in the bottom of the inning tied the game.

In the third, the Gamecocks had back-to-back doubles to take a 2-1 lead but the Gators again responded in the bottom of the inning with a two-out, RBI single from Austin Langworthy to knot the game at 2-2.

USC knocked Florida starter Tyler Dyson from the game in the fifth inning with two more runs and held a 4-2 lead until the seventh inning.

The Gators rallied with two outs and cut the lead to one on Brady McConnell's RBI single.

With a one-run lead in the bottom of the ninth, South Carolina's Wesley Sweatt struck out the first two batters of the inning before Florida rallied again.

Back-to-back walks to Langworthy and Kendrick Calilao set the stage for Butler's walk-off homer.

IN THE SPOTLIGHT: Jordan Butler – Getting the start at first base, the sophomore went 4-for-5 with two home runs and four RBI. Prior to Saturday, Butler did not have a home run in his career and only had 23 at bats this season. The walk-off home run was the second walk-off hit of his career; he also had a walk-off single against Rhode Island on March 10, 2018.

FROM THE PLAYER: Sophomore Jordan Butler – On the walk-off home run: "During the at bat, I was just trying to play baseball. Nothing's different, just hit the baseball. He went 2-0 on me and he threw it right where I needed it, so it got the job done."

FROM THE COACH: Head Coach Kevin O'Sullivan – On Jordan Butler getting the start at first base: "I've kind of struggled with this all year long … we've talked quite a bit about how he swings the bat. We just haven't had a place to put him in the lineup. With our lack of left-handers in the bullpen, we've kind of held on to Kendrick at first base, and with Wil Dalton having the year he had last year thinking that he's going to get back to where he was at some point. So we've kind of stayed with the lineup.

"I'm not saying I expected him to do what he did today, but he certainly is capable. With Nelly's shoulder being a little sore today, it opened up some opportunities for us to move some guys around and put Kendrick in right field, play Butler at first, and Kirby has earned the opportunity to get some at bats. He had a big hit against Florida State on Tuesday and then two good at bats last night. It just worked out for us.

"I'm happy with the way they battled. It's a young team. We needed something like this to help us. Hopefully this is the one positive moment in our season the gets us going. Every team has those moments and hopefully this is the one."

UP NEXT: Florida hosts Jacksonville Tuesday at 6 p.m. The game will stream live on SEC Network+ and fans can listen to the Gators Sports Network.
