Claye, Craddock Qualify for Worlds, Three More Gators Advance
Friday, July 26, 2019 | Track and Field
DES MOINES, Iowa – Gators Greats Will Claye and Omar Craddock combined for a 2-3 finish in the triple jump to secure their IAAF World Championships berths, while another trio of Gators advanced in their respective events Friday evening at the USA Track and Field Outdoor Championships.
Claye, the silver medalist at the 2016 Olympics and 2017 World Championships, and Craddock traded stellar jumps and brought the Drake Stadium crowd to life.
Although Donald Scott's first jump of 17.74 meters (58 feet, 2.5 inches) held up for the entire competition, Claye registered four jumps of at least 17.64 meters (57 feet, 10.5 inches), including his runner-up mark of 17.70 meters (58 feet, 1 inch). Claye also posted two wind-legal jumps of 17.68 meters (58 feet, 0.25 inches) in his series, which broke former collegiate teammate Christian Taylor's facility record. Taylor took two hops over the board and watched the rest of the competition at field level, as his World Championships spot is already secure by virtue of being the reigning world champion.
Craddock took bronze with the second-best jump of his career, which registered 17.55 meters (57 feet, 7 inches). This is the first time since 2015 Craddock qualified for Team USA, and it will mark his third career global championship appearance, as he also made the team in 2013. Craddock barely missed the last two global championship teams, settling for fourth at the 2016 U.S. Olympic Trials and fifth at the 2017 USATF Outdoors.
Also in the triple jump final, three-time NCAA champion KeAndre Bates finished fifth.
Reigning Olympic gold medalist Kerron Clement and 2017 World Championships fifth-place finisher TJ Holmes both automatically qualified for Friday's 400-meter hurdles final. Holmes took third in his heat, while Clement was fourth in his. The top four finishers in each of Friday's two heats earned lanes for the final. Clement, 33, is seeking an 11th consecutive global championships berth.
The day's third advancer was Bridgette Owens, who nabbed the fourth and final "time" qualifier for the 100-meter hurdles semifinals.
