Wednesday, October 27, 2021 | Cross Country
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – It's that time of the year as Florida's men's and women's cross country teams compete at the SEC Championships. This season, the conference meet will be held in Columbia, Mo., at the Gans Creek Cross Country Course on Friday, Oct. 29. The men will run in an 8k race starting at 11:08 a.m., while the women are set to run in a 6k race at 11:50 a.m.
On the men's side, four Gators will be competing in the SEC Championships for the second year in a row – Ethan Geiger, Reed Legg, Angel Vicioso and Cavan Wilson. Both Vicioso and Geiger placed in the top-50 last season as Vicioso was 31st and Geiger was 47th.
Geiger is having an impressive season so far as he has been the top Florida finisher in two of three meets. The other top finisher for the Gators was freshman Matt Mule', who placed 84th out of 180 of the top runners in the nation at the Notre Dame Joe Piane Invitational.
For the women, Parker Valby continued to dominate in all three races she's competed in. Valby claimed the top Florida spot in each race and now holds the 10th spot in Florida's all-time 5k marks with a PR of 16:54.3. Most recently, Valby put together another strong race at the FSU Pre-Nationals meet as she placed 28th with a 6k PR of 20:19.9, which just missed UF's all-time 6k list and is also the eighth best time in the conference.
Imogen Barrett ran well in her first race of the season at the Pre-Nationals meet as she posted a 6k time of 20:53.4 to rank 16th in the conference, followed by Stephanie Ormsby's time of 21:00.7 to sit at 18th in the SEC. The women's team has five Gators who will race in the conference championships this Friday for the second season in a row – Emily Culley, Maria Fernandez, Gianna Forte, Jordan Shapiro and Vasileia Spyrou. Spyrou posted the top mark for Florida last year after placing 17th with a 6k time of 20:42.3.
Both teams are facing some tough competition as five total teams are ranked on both sides. Arkansas' men's team sits at No. 6, while Alabama's men's team comes in at No. 22. The women's teams have three in the top-30 as Alabama is No. 5, Ole Miss is No. 11 and Arkansas is No. 15. The Crimson Tide also returns defending NCAA Cross Country Champion, Mercy Chelangat, as well as Amaris Tyynismaa, who placed third at nationals last season.
Live stats for the race can be found here. The meet will be broadcast on SEC Network.
