TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Sophomore Ben Shelton advanced to the singles quarterfinals and the doubles pairing of Shelton and Mattias Siimar made it to the semifinals at the ITF Tallahassee 15k tournament last weekend.
Shelton and Siimar came in as the No. 2-seeded doubles team and took on Antoine Cornut Chauvinc and Loris Pourroy in the first round, winning the match by scores of 6-3, 6-4. In the quarterfinals, the pair had a familiar foe as they took on Gator Abedallah Shelbayh and Bruno Kuzuhara. In the match, the Shelton/Siimar duo won in a super tiebreak, 6-3, 3-6, 10-5. The pair competed against No. 4-seeds Liam Draxl and John McNally in the semifinals, but fell just short of making a finals appearance as the Draxl/McNally duo won by two 6-4 scores.
Shelbayh and Kuzuhara, who won the doubles trophy back at the ITF M15 Naples tournament a couple of weeks ago, would pair up again for this tournament. They easily won their first-round match versus FSU's Maks Silagy and Joshua Dous Karpenschif, 6-2, 6-3. The duo would take on the No. 2-seeds Shelton and Siimar in the quarterfinals, but drop the match in a close one, 3-6, 6-3, 5-10.
Duarte Vale and Johannes Ingildsen paired up again this week for doubles after claiming the doubles trophy at the 15k Vero Beach tournament. The two won their first match against Alex Knaff and Alexandre Reco in a super tiebreak, 6-3, 3-6, 10-7, but would lose their quarterfinals match to the No. 4-seeded team of Draxl and McNally, 7-5, 2-6, 0-10.
In singles, Shelton defeated his first-round opponent, No. 5-seed/ATP No. 631 player, Thomas Fancutt, in straight sets 6-1, 7-5. This win put him in an all-Gators matchup for the second round against Vale. Shelton advanced to the quarterfinals after a gutsy win over his teammate, 6-3, 3-6, 6-3. Shelton then faced ATP No. 544 player and No. 3-seed, Vasil Kirkov, in the quarterfinals but would fall in a touch matchup, 6-7 (3), 6-3, 3-6.
In the first round of singles, Vale took on FSU's No. 1 player, Pourroy. The two went back-and-forth in their match, with the Gator prevailing in three sets, 5-7, 7-6 (4), 6-3. Vale would be paired up against Shelton in the second round where he fell in a three-set battle, 3-6, 6-3, 3-6.
Florida had three competing in the singles qualifying draw of the tournament as Andy Andrade was the sole Gator to advance to the main draw with two wins. His first victory came against Karpenschif, 6-3, 6-1, then he qualified with a win over No. 3-seed, Joshua Peck, in decisive fashion, 6-1, 6-0. Mattias Siimar also collected a win in qualifying after defeating FSU's Sebastian Arcila, 6-3, 6-3.
Andrade's two wins put him in the main draw for an all-Gators first-round matchup against Shelbayh. Andrade would advance to the second round after beating his teammate, 6-1, 6-2, before falling to No. 4-seed/ATP No. 537 player, Matias Franco Descotte, in the following round.
