Thursday, February 11, 2021 | Track and Field
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Florida track and field will return to action this weekend as they travel to Fayetteville, Ark. to compete in this year's Tyson Invitational Friday and Saturday inside the Randal Tyson Track Center. The meet will be the last of UF's indoor non-championship competition before gearing up for this year's SEC Indoor Track and Field Championships.
The Gators will hit the ground running Friday as several squads will be competing, including Florida's DMR unit which will make its first appearance of the season.
Returning senior Raymond Ekevwo will make his season debut in the 60 meters. Ekevwo, who was the NCAA leader in 2020 for that event, will look to improve his 6.53 personal-best time which currently ranks third in school history.
Hurdler Grace Stark will headline the 60-meter hurdles, looking to improve her season-best time of 8.07 seconds that ranks tied for second nationally.
Senior Thomas Mardal will also return to the circle on Friday. The SEC Field Athlete of the Week will make his second appearance this year in the weight throw after setting an NCAA-leading mark during last week's South Carolina Invitational.
Chantz Sawyers will be making his return to the track after not seeing any action during the shorten 2020 season. The senior will make his season debut in the 400 meters. Taylor Manson and Sterling Lester will represent the Gators on the women's side of that event.
Jumpers Claire Bryant and Kala Penn will be joined by Alexis Brown to compete in the long jump. On the men's side, PJ Austin and Malcolm Clemons will appear in the long jump alongside Michael Holloway II. Clemons ranks sixth in the nation, while Austin is tied for ninth.
On Saturday, Penn and Clemons will move on to the triple jump. Penn, who ranks seventh in the nation, will be joined by Natricia Hooper while Jonathan Miller will join Clemons on the men's side.
Meanwhile Joseph Fahnbulleh, who was named the SEC Co-Runner of the Week after running the third-fastest time in the nation last week, will compete in the men's 200 meters during the second day of competition. On the women's side, SEC Freshman of the Week Talitha Diggs, who ranks fourth in the nation, will be joined by Lauryn Ghee, Semira Killebrew and Taylor Manson in the 200 meters.
On the distance front, Gabrielle Wilkinson will look to improve her NCAA top-10 time in the 800 meters. The redshirt sophomore crossed in 2:05.71 at South Carolina, landing on the No. 9 spot of this year's NCAA Division I Indoor Qualifying list.
Meanwhile, Imogen Barrett, who was crowned SEC champion in the 1,500 meters in 2019, will make her first appearance this season when she competes in the mile.
