Women’s tennis resumes SEC circuit with contests at Ole Miss and Mississippi State.
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Following an 11-day break in competition, the No. 22 University of Florida women's tennis team (7-6, 5-3) hits the road for two matchups this week in the state of Mississippi. Florida begins its swing on Thursday when it travels to Ole Miss before wrapping up Sunday at Mississippi State.
The Gators last took to the courts on March 14 when they took out the No. 20 Arkansas Razorbacks at home. Collecting their second 4-0 win of the weekend, the Gators earned their fourth-straight win in Gainesville over a ranked foe. In wins over the Razorbacks and No. 41 Missouri, Florida performed well in both doubles and singles. UF secured the doubles point in both contests and freshman Sara Dahlstrom contributed two singles victories for the weekend.
For her efforts, Dahlstrom earned her first-ever SEC Freshman of the Week designation. No. 32 McCartney Kessler continues to pace the Gators from the top spot in singles as the senior enters the matchup with an 8-2 record. In doubles, Kessler has been even more dominant with a 9-2 mark competing alongside junior Marlee Zein. The nation's 26th-ranked duo has registered nine-consecutive wins. Doubles play has been a key factor in the Gators' success as they have come out victorious five of the six times they have collected the opening tally.
The Gators, who are 5-1 at home this year, will look to return to their winning ways away from Gainesville.
After dropping three of its first four league matchups, No. 23 Ole Miss has posted three-consecutive victories. In its most recent action SEC weekend, Ole Miss secured victories at No. 48 Alabama and at No. 18 Auburn. The Rebels feature one ranked singles player in No. 39 Sabina Machalova to go with two ranked doubles duos in No. 24 Machalova and Alexa Bortles and No. 44 Anna Vrbenska and Tereza Janatova. Janatova, a senior, leads the way with an 8-1 record in dual match play. At 6-5, Vrbenska and Janatova pace the Rebels in doubles wins, playing all their matches at the No. 2 slot. In this 18th season in Oxford, Mark Beyers is the head coach of the Rebels.
No. 36 MSU enters the matchup 10-6 overall but has dropped six of its first eight league tilts. The Bulldogs snapped a four-match losing streak last time out on March 13 when they came back to defeat No. 48 Alabama, 4-3 in Tuscaloosa. Mississippi State features two players that have already posted double-figure wins in Magda Adaloglou (10-1) and Emma Antonaki (11-2). The senior from Greece, Antonaki, is the lone Bulldog in the ITA singles rankings as she enters at No. 69. Tamara Racine and Magda Adaloglou (No. 41) represent MSU in the doubles rankings. Daryl Greenan, who has led the Bulldogs to five NCAA appearances, is the team's head coach. Before hosting the Gators on Saturday, MSU battles South Carolina.
Florida holds a 48-3 mark in terms of its all-time series against the Rebels and is 39-1 against Mississippi State. UF last squared off against Ole Miss on April 18, 2019 in the opening round of the SEC Tournament where it scored a 4-2 win over the Rebels. Florida and Mississippi State last met on March 3 of the same year in Gainesville. Despite Florida rushing out to a 3-1 lead, MSU battled back to win 4-3 and earn its first-ever win over the Gators.
