Women's tennis to battle Gamecocks in Columbia in final regular season test.
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – The No. 13 University of Florida women's tennis team (11-6, 9-3) faces its final test of the regular season Tuesday, April 13 when it travels to No. 24 South Carolina (10-9, 7-5). First serve is set for Noon ET at the Carolina Tennis Center as the Gators and Gamecocks meet for the 48th time.
The contest was originally slated for Saturday, April 10 but was rescheduled for Tuesday due to inclement weather in the Columbia area.
Tuesday's matchup features two teams with identical six-match winning streaks. After falling at No. 3 Georgia and No. 21 Tennessee in succession in early March, the Gators have rattled off an impressive stretch of victories defeating six-straight top 50 opponents.
Taking on No. 19 Vanderbilt in its most recent matchup on April 3, UF battled to a 4-2 win in what was its home finale. The Gators sent seniors Ida Jarlskog and McCartney Kessler off in style as they overcame their loss of the doubles point and turned in an excellent performance in singles.
Despite dropping the last two doubles point, the Gators play in doubles has continued to improve as the season has grown older. Posting a 51-27 overall dual match record in singles play, Florida has been a formidable singles unit with strong play from court one on down.
No. 7 Kessler paces the Gators from their top singles spot with a 12-2 dual match record and has won her last six matches. From court six, junior Sydney Berlin has been a steady force with a five-match winning streak of her own and a 10-4 record. No. 36 Marlee Zein, who has played to 8-4 record, and No. 111 Sara Dahlstrom also represent the Gators in the ITA singles rankings. The senior Jarlskog has been a pivotal piece for the Gators since moving to the No. 3 slot, where she is 6-1 on the year. Sophomore Layne Sleeth is 7-1 in dual match and has registered a 5-0 record since moving to the fourth court.
In doubles, the Gators are 22-23 overall in dual match play but have made some serious strides as of late. The nation's No. 2 doubles unit, Kessler and Zein, lead the way with a 9-4 record while Jarlskog and Sleeth are 5-0 since joining forces on the second court. When securing the doubles point, UF is 7-1 on the season.
No. 24 South Carolina, which entered the season pegged No. 14 in the ITA rankings, has defeated the same set of six teams in succession that the Gators have with consecutive victories over Arkansas, Missouri, Mississippi State, Ole Miss, Vanderbilt and Kentucky. USC features three ranked singles players in No. 39 Mia Horvit, No. 46 Megan Davies and No. 108 Emma Shelton and one ranked doubles duo in No. 16 Horvit and Davies. USC is just 26-25 overall in dual match singles play but has proven itself to be potent doubles squad with a 30-16 mark. Nine different players have appeared for the Gamecocks in singles this season and a trio of competitors are tied for the team lead in wins. The two-time Horvit, Davies and the sophomore Shelton have all collected eights win on the year. The Gamecocks, who have featured 10 different doubles pairings in 2021, are paced in doubles victories by Allie Gretkowski and Ana Cruz who are a perfect 10-0 from the No. 3 position.
Florida is 44-4 all time against the Gamecocks but has dropped the last two meetings. The Gators are 18-1 in matchups played in Columbia.
Following its matchup against the Gamecocks, Florida will next take the court at the SEC Tournament in Tuscaloosa, Ala. from April 19 – 23.
