
Gators Open NCAA East Preliminary with Two Eugene Berths

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Florida's men punched two NCAA Outdoor Championships tickets and advanced five of its seven runners to seven events finals on the opening day of the NCAA East Preliminary at Hodges Stadium in Jacksonville.
The afternoon belonged to Florida's throwing corps, as seniors Thomas Mardal and Connor Bandel secured Eugene berths in the hammer and shot put, respectively.
Mardal, the NCAA champion in the weight throw, logged a throw of 71.29 meters (233 feet, 10 inches) in the hammer, becoming the first Gator this week to secure his spot at nationals. The berth marks Mardal's third consecutive trip to the NCAA championship meet.
Meanwhile Bandel, who earned a bronze medal at SEC Outdoors earlier this season, secured his second consecutive berth with a throw of 19.52 meters (64 feet, 0.50 inches).
The runners who advanced to the final round of this week's preliminary meet include Joseph Fahnbulleh (men's 100 & 200 meters), Dedrick Vanover (men's 100 & 200 meters), Tyler Davis (200 meters) Ryan Willie (men's 400 meters) and Denzel Villaman (men's 400-meter hurdles). The men's final round is scheduled for Friday. Meanwhile, the women's team will begin competition Thursday, with their finals taking place Saturday.
Florida's women boast 17 entries in this year's NCAA East Preliminary meet, including top-ranked Talitha Diggs (No. 2 seed – 400m), Gabrielle Wilkinson (No. 4 seed – 800m), Grace Stark (No. 3 seed – 100mH), Claire Bryant (No. 2 seed – Long Jump) and Arianne Duarte-Morais (No. 5 seed – Javelin) among others. The women's final round will feature Florida's No. 1-seeded 4x400-meter relays team. The Gators finished second at SEC Outdoors with a team formed by Taylor Manson, Sterling Lester, Doneisha Anderson and Diggs.
The top 48 individual and top 24 relay declarations within the East and West Regions earned berths to their respective preliminary meet, and only 12 from each regional competition will advance to the championship meet in Eugene, Oregon, slated for June 9-12.
