GAINESVILLE, Fla. - Abedallah Shelbayh is an incoming Gator who has made his way through some tough competition at major tournaments this summer. His trek was highlighted by a doubles final appearance at Junior Wimbledon and a J1 Roehampton doubles title with teammate Daniel Rincon.
In the first round of doubles at Junior Wimbledon, Shelbayh and Rincon made it past the pairing of Kalin Ivanovski and Mili Poljicak in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4. During the following round, the Shelbayh/Rincon duo outlasted Alexander Bernard and Dali Blanch, 7-5, 7-6 (7-5), to move on to the quarterfinals. Again, the pair had another close match, this time against Igor Kudriashov and Robin Bertrand, to advance to the semifinals with a 6-7 (8-10), 7-5, 10-6, victory. With a 6-4, 6-2, win against Samir Banerjee and Kokoro Isomura, the duo made it to finals where they would eventually fall in a tough match to Edas Butvilas and Alejandro Manzanera Pertuso, 3-6, 4-6.
Shelbayh also made it to the second round of singles competition at Junior Wimbledon after defeating Sweden's Mans Dahlberg, 6-4, 6-3. He became the first player from Jordan to compete at the event after his junior grand slam appearance.
The incoming Gator won the J1 Roehampton boys' doubles title with Rincon just before Junior Wimbledon. The group defeated Hugo Coquelin and Luca Pow, 7-6 (6), 6-3, in the first round, then beat Maks Kasnikowski and Aleksander Orlikowski, 4-6, 7-6 (2), 10-6, in the following round. During the quarterfinals, the Shelbayh/Rincon pairing went to three sets with Bernard and Blanch, who they also competed against at Junior Wimbledon, and won 4-6, 6-2, 10-5. The semifinals saw a walkover from Jerome Kym and Marko Topo, advancing Shelbayh and Rincon to the finals where they pulled off an exciting victory against Banerjee and Max Westphal, 4-6, 7-6 (5), 12-10.
Shelbayh also had a great outing in doubles competition at the M15 Monastir tournament in late July. Shelbayh was paired with Pedro Vives Marcos, and they made it all the way to the finals before losing to Arthur Bouquier and Santiago Fa Rodriguez Taverna, 7-6 (7-2), 3-6, 6-10. Before getting to the finals, Shelbayh and his teammate defeated all of their competition in straight sets.
