Gators Make Trip to Lone Star State for Two Top-5 Matches
Thursday, January 13, 2022 | Men's Tennis
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – The unanimous No. 1 Florida Gators men's tennis team heads to Texas this week for two top-five matchups. The Gators' season opener is against the No. 5 TCU Horned Frogs on Friday, Jan. 14 at 7 p.m. inside the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center, followed by a Sunday match versus the No. 3 Texas Longhorns at 1 p.m. at the Texas Tennis Center.
Florida is familiar with both opponents this weekend after seeing them over the course of last season. The Gators took on TCU on March 17, 2021 and would go on to sweep the Frogs with a 7-0 score. Six of the eight matches resulted in a ranked victory for the Gators, with Sam Riffice and Duarte Vale picking up a ranked win in singles and doubles.
Florida will repeat its 2021 NCAA semifinal matchup with the Texas Longhorns on Sunday. Last season, the Gators went 1-1 against the Big 12 foe, losing a heartbreaker, 4-3, in the ITA Kick-Off Weekend to just miss the ITA National Team Indoor Championships. Florida came back with a vengeance and swept Texas in the NCAA semifinals, 4-0, claiming five ranked victories along the way to keep their national championship hopes alive.
The Gators return a myriad of talent to the roster, losing only three players from last year's squad. Returners include defending national singles champion, Riffice, seniors Vale, Andy Andrade, Josh Goodger and Lukas Greif, junior Will Grant and sophomore Ben Shelton. Florida added three talented student-athletes to the team in ITA Doubles All-American and graduate transfer from Michigan, Mattias Siimar, and two freshmen in Nate Bonetto and Abedallah Shelbayh.
