Talitha Diggs Runs Personal Best, Men's 4x400 Relay Steals Show on Day 2 of Tyson Invitational
Saturday, February 12, 2022 | Track and Field
Fayetteville, Ark. – In what ended up being her only race of the weekend, sprinter Talitha Diggs ran the second-fastest time in the NCAA this season and the fourth-fastest time in the world this season with a mark of 22.75 in Saturday's 200 meters.
She lowered her personal best by .16 seconds and remains second in Florida history in the event.
The Gators swept the 200 meters with Jacory Patterson running 20.91 in the final heat on Saturday. Ryan Willie wasn't far behind with a season best of 21.01 to take 4th place.
Jasmine Moore and Natricia Hooper continued to dominate the Triple Jump event by taking 1st and 2nd on Saturday afternoon. Moore jumped 14.19m/46-6.75 while Hooper followed at 13.96m/45-9.75 to close out the weekend.
In the 4x400 relay, Florida held on in a tightly-contested race to finish 1st with an NCAA-leading and World-leading time of 3:02.09. The final heat featured the now-current top three marks in the NCAA this year.
Willie split 45.10 on the second leg to put the Gators in prime position before Jacob Miley and Champion Allison split 45.68 and 45.67 to fend off Iowa and Arkansas in the best race of the meet.
Overall on the weekend, Florida won five events in the final full team event before the SEC Indoor Championships at the end of the month.
The Gators will take a select number of athletes to Texas Tech next weekend in the last tune-up before the postseason.
Quotable: Head Coach Mike Holloway:
On today's performance:
"We had another good day here and over in Tennessee. I want to start with Sam Austin. A two-second personal best in the 800 meters. I want to give a shoutout to Chase Ruskin as well. A two-second PB in the 800 meters here as well. I think overall, we had some good, not great, 200's. A good 200 meters by Talitha Diggs, the second-fastest time in school history. The ladies in the triple jump were phenomenal again. We struggled a little bit in the men's triple jump but Coach Petersen will get that figured out. I'm not worried about that. At the end of the day, you close the meet with a great 4x400. That's what you do. The 4x400 is sometimes where you win the meet and for us to go out and improve our season's best by almost a full second. That's one of the top two times in school history."
"We just got to get back to work. This is a weekend we're typically flat. But what we can't do is get down in the dumps if we had a bad weekend or ride a high if we had a good weekend. We have to get back to Gainesville, reset and get back to work. Two weeks from today we'll be in the middle of the best conference track meet on the face of the planet so we have to be ready for that.
Music City Challenge Results:
Sam Austin ran 1:47.79, a two-second PR in the 800 meters and the 4th-fastest time in the NCAA this season.
